The iconic 'Espresso' vocalist turned heads at the 2025 Met Gala on Monday night (May 5), not just for her bold fashion choice but for the surprisingly blunt reason she wasn’t wearing pants.

The 25-year-old walked the blue carpet outside the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan in a pantless tuxedo-inspired bodysuit by Louis Vuitton, complete with a burgundy train, sparkling diamond accessories, and a matching blazer.

Her look was crafted under the direction of Pharrell Williams, Louis Vuitton’s menswear creative director.

The theme of this year’s Met Gala, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, coincided with a new exhibit at the Met’s Costume Institute.

According to the Met website, the exhibition "explores the importance of style to the formation of Black identities in the Atlantic diaspora, particularly in the United States and Europe".

Celebrities including Zendaya, Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner, and a pregnant Rihanna all put their own spin on the fashion-forward dress code.

Carpenter’s outfit, while sharply tailored, came without trousers, and the 'Please Please Please' vocalist revealed exactly why in an interview with Vogue: “This is Pharrell. I’m such a massive fan of Pharrell’s and have been to the show and I was just like, ‘If I could go this year with him, that would be my dream.’ And it came true.”

But Pharrell had one particular vision for her look. “He was like, ‘You’re quite short, so no pants for you.’ So here we are. Here we are,” she said.

Though the chilly New York weather may have made the pantless moment less than cozy, Carpenter saw a potential upside: freedom to finally use the bathroom during the event.

“Never been to the bathroom once because I’ve never been able to use it in my outfit. So tonight might be the night,” she said. “We’ll see... And I’m just gonna let everybody know what it looks like. I’m sure it’s just a normal museum bathroom, but I’m excited to find out.”

Carpenter’s latest Met Gala appearance comes just a year after she and then-boyfriend Barry Keoghan made headlines with their coordinated debut on the 2024 Met Gala red carpet.

For that year’s “Garden of Time” theme, the 'Feather' singer stunned in a custom Oscar de la Renta gown.

The strapless dress featured a sculpted mermaid-style bodice with a sweetheart neckline and a voluminous, cloud-like satin skirt in a soft blue hue. She completed the look with black platform heels, a statement necklace, and her blonde hair swept into an elegant updo.

Keoghan complemented her ensemble in an olive velvet Burberry jacket with matching trousers, creating a striking visual pairing.

“I feel so lucky,” Carpenter said at the time. “Fernando [Garcia] was so incredible in helping us design this dress that pulls a lot from the story, The Garden of Time, but also just in general a lot of my favorite things. Like, this color blue is very in theme with my life, so I love it.”

However, by last December, a source told PEOPLE that the pair had “decided to take a break.”
