Following a tumultuous week in US politics, Academy Award winner Robert De Niro has spoken out on Michael Moore's podcast about how he'd like to see President Donald Trump "humiliated", the Evening Standard has reported.

Now, it's become commonplace in recent years for actors to let their political beliefs be known, but De Niro's recent comments may be the most visceral.

This is far from the first time De Niro has attacked Trump. In the video below, he calls Trump a "scumbag":

The 76-year-old star of The Irishman recently appeared on documentary maker Michael Moore's podcast, RUMBLE with Michael Moore, to say how he feels the public needed to see the POTUS "humiliated".

The Godfather Part II star added: "I'd like to see a bag of s*** right in his face. Hit him right in the face like that and let the picture go all over the world.

"That would be the most humiliating thing because he needs to be humiliated. He needs to be confronted and humiliated by whoever his opponent is - his political opponent.

"They don't need to do it in an obvious physical way but they have to have the formidability to confront him and put him in his place.

"The people have to see him humiliated."

De Niro went on to say that whoever won the race to become the Democratic Party's presidential candidate would eventually have to confront Donald Trump.

Robert De Niro says Donald Trump should not be president:

The actor continued, going as far as to suggest that members of the Republican Party had "made a deal with the devil" by working with him.

"What's the rationale? You are a public servant and you have gone and you have compromised yourself," he said, adding:

"You have sold yourself, you have prostituted yourself to be with this fool that taints everybody. Nobody is going to forget. Years down the line, the press will not forget what these people have done to enable this terrible situation."
