Spike Lee has revealed what he thinks actually happened on September 11, 2001.

The acclaimed Hollywood director spoke on the subject of 9/11 while promoting his documentary series NYC Epicenters 9/11-> 2021½ - set to be released on Sunday, August 22.

But the most recent episode of the series focuses on the conspiracy group Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth - which alleges that the US government was secretly responsible for the destruction of the World Trade Center.

Take a look at the trailer for the upcoming d0cumentary in the video below:

Sharing his thoughts on the topic in a recent interview with The New York Times, Lee stated:

"I mean, I got questions. And I hope that maybe the legacy of this documentary is that Congress holds a hearing, a congressional hearing about 9/11.

"The amount of heat that it takes to make steel melt, that temperature's not reached.

"And then the juxtaposition of the way Building 7 fell to the ground – when you put it next to other building collapses that were demolitions, it's like you’re looking at the same thing."

Lee added that his intent with his series was for the public to make their own judgment after watching and that he wanted to "let people decide for themselves," because he "respect[s] the intelligence of the audience."

The Hill reports that Lee's initial cut of the episode also featured scientists who probed the attacks and disproved the claims made by conspiracists.

One of these scientists includes S. Shyam Sunder, who spearheaded an investigation into the incident for the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

This comes not long after more than 1,800 people, including the families of a number of victims of 9/11, signed a letter urging President Joe Biden to declassify key documents which they believe implicate a number of Saudi officials in the attacks.

BBC News reports that the letter states that, if Biden refuses to release the files, he should not attend the upcoming 20th-anniversary remembrance ceremonies.

The letter states: "We cannot in good faith, and with veneration to those lost, sick, and injured, welcome the president to our hallowed grounds until he fulfills his commitment."
