The whirlwind relationship between Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson has captivated us all in recent weeks, especially after it was revealed that the couple was engaged mere weeks after they officially started dating. After all, Ariana and Pete had both gotten out of longish relationships shortly before hooking up.
They've been very cutesy with one another – writing adorable comments on each others' Instagram posts, sharing pictures in matching Harry Potter onesies, and even getting tattoo tributes of their love. So you'd be forgiven for thinking that the proposal was a very romantic affair as well. However, that wasn't exactly the case.
According to someone who went to see the SNL host's surprise standup comedy set for a charity in New York this week, he disclosed details of the proposal for the very first time. She shared the news via Twitter, and the proposal was... unusual... to say the least. I'll let you down early by saying there were no flowers, candlelit dinners, or puppies involved.
So how did he pop the question?
"I just went to see Pete Davidson do stand up and he said he proposed to Ariana while he was smoking weed in bed," the Twitter-user said.
I mean, asking someone for their hand in marriage while smoking a joint isn't very conventional – and the assumed spontaneity of the proposal probably wouldn't be taken entirely seriously by most people either. However, none of that seemed to matter to the young lovebirds.
Someone rolled their eyes at Pete in the form of a comment, asking "Why is he always dropping Ari's name in his stand up routines? Such a clout chaser."
Well, it's probably hard not to right now seeing as he's completely head-over-heels with her, but the original poster replied to the comment to reiterate that he was prompted to talk about their relationship during the Q&A session.
"He actually never mentioned her in his routine!" they wrote. "He did a Q and A session at the end and my friend asked him how he proposed :)."
The question is, though, whether Pete was telling the truth or if he was just trying to be funny. The person who heard Pete describe the engagement composed another tweet to provide a disclaimer to state that she didn't ~actually~ know if that's how he popped the question. To clarify, she wrote: "to everyone asking me if that’s actually how he proposed or if he was just joking: idk??? the f*ck I look like TMZ."
Meanwhile, Ariana's ex, Mac Miller, finally commented on the sudden engagement this week. He told Zane Lowe on Apple's international radio station Beats 1 that he's "happy for her".
"It's strange," he admitted. "Like, the whole thing is a little strange but it's not negative. It's just a part of something that's going to continue to help make me who I am.
"You know, it's all positive energy. I am happy for her and moving forward with her life just as I'm sure she is with me."
Well, we're also happy for both of them, no matter how the proposal was made.
