A theory about how the Squid Game players and workers are chosen is going viral.

The nine-part South Korean series has been a worldwide hit since it was released on Netflix, however, even for those who have binged it, there are still a lot of questions around how the Squid Game actually works.

Now, a theory about how the players and workers are chosen has gone viral on TikTok, as per Esquire.

Watch the trailer for Squid Game below:

Without giving too much away, the first episode of Squid Game sees the show's main character, Seong Gi-Hun, play a game of Ddakji in a subway station with an anonymous man.

He is given the choice between a red and a blue tile, and he chooses blue - as do all of the other players in the show.

In the viral TikTok, user @lucy.what1 notes, "He asks him to choose a color." The video then cuts to Gi-Hun and says, "He chooses blue and wakes up as a player."

The video then cuts to a picture of the workers and asks: "What if he had chosen red?"

Watch the viral TikTok below:

Lucy captioned the theory: "it's just my guess but i have checked, all the other players have also selected the color blue [sic]." Of course, the insinuation here is that if Gi-Hun had chosen red, he would have been recruited as a worker for the games.

The video did not go unnoticed since it was posted on September 23, and at the time of writing, it has received over 48 million views, been liked over 7.8 million times, and received more than 134K comments.

Reacting to the theory, one TikTok user wrote: "OMG THIS MAKES SO MUCH SENSE."

A second speculated: "What if he joins the next game as a worker and [infiltrates] and [sabotages] the game to save the people?"

A third wrote: "I have a theory I think the red are in debt [too] and [they're] making money off the body parts that the doctor was cutting off like the hearts and livers."

Meanwhile, a fourth wrote: "i would like to see a version where someone chooses red [sic]."

A fifth agreed, writing: "Omg the next season will be probably him choosing red."
