'Avengers: Endgame' passes 'Avatar' to become biggest movie of all time

It's fair to say that Avengers: Endgame was worth waiting for. After more than a decade of build-up, the mightiest heroes in the Marvel universe squared off against Thanos the mad titan and undo the cataclysm wrought by the Infinity Gauntlet. Cinemagoers all around the world flocked in their droves to movie theatres to see the Avengers vanquish the interstellar conquerer, and the box office results speak for themselves.

Now Avengers: Endgame has officially surpassed James Cameron's 3D sci-fi movie Avatar to become the highest-grossing film ever on Sunday in its 13th weekend of release.

Cameron's Avatar held the record for 10 years, but now Avengers: Endgame has managed to make more than $2.789 billion worldwide.

Commenting on the milestone, co-chairman and chief creative officer of Disney told CNN: "A huge congratulations to the Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios teams, and thank you to the fans around the world who lifted Avengers: Endgame to these historic heights."

Meanwhile,  Shawn Robbins, chief analyst at Boxoffice.com, told CNN Business: "Endgame has cemented the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a cornerstone of modern mythos that will be passed down to generations of fans. That would have been true regardless of its monetary position relative to Avatar."

He added: "Never before had audiences experienced an episodic, cinematic journey over the span of 11 years. It's nearly impossible to predict something like that, just as 'Avatar's' own run was widely unexpected. In a way, they share that common bond."
