Ivan Reitman, who directed the original Ghostbusters, has died at the age of 75.
The family of the celebrated filmmaker told the Associated Press that Reitman died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Montecito, California, on Saturday night, but did not reveal his cause of death.
Reitman's children Jason Reitman, Catherine Reitman, and Caroline Reitman said in a joint statement to the outlet: "Our family is grieving the unexpected loss of a husband, father, and grandfather who taught us to always seek the magic in life.
"We take comfort that his work as a filmmaker brought laughter and happiness to countless others around the world. While we mourn privately, we hope those who knew him through his films will remember him always."
The film industry veteran, best known for directing the Ghostbusters franchise as well as comedies Animal House and Twins, inspired countless people both in and outside of Hollywood.
In fact, a number of his collaborators have paid tribute to him as they mourn the loss of a true great.
The 2016 Ghostbusters director Paul Feig wrote on Twitter alongside an image of the late director: "I’m in absolute shock. I had the honor of working so closely with Ivan and it was always such a learning experience.
"He directed some of my favorite comedies of all time. All of us in comedy owe him so very much. Thank you for everything, Ivan. Truly."
Tom Rothman, Chairman, and CEO, Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group said: "Tonight, the lady with the torch weeps, as do all of us at Columbia, and film lovers around the world. Ivan Reitman was an inseparable part of this studio's legacy, but more than that he was a friend.
"A great talent and an even finer man; he will be dearly missed. We send his family all our condolences."
Guy Branum, who acted alongside Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman in Reitman's 2011 romantic comedy No Strings Attached, wrote: "I got to be in a movie because Ivan Reitman's saw me on TV and thought I was funny. He was impossibly kind, astoundingly funny, and made so many of my favorite movies. I'm so sorry for his family's loss."
No Strings Attached co-star Mindy Kaling added: "Ivan Reitman was old school in the best way, and kind. I loved working with him. It’s sad he’s gone, it makes me feel older and like my childhood movies are more faraway than ever. RIP."
And the Hollywood tributes continued to pour in:
