For people of a certain age, Spy Kids is a very special movie. The first instalment saw two rival spies, Gregorio (Antonio Banderas) and Ingrid (Carla Gugino) fall in love. Soon enough, they retire from their dangerous missions in espionage, and raise a family.
Their two children, 12-year-old Carmen (Alexa Vega) and nine-year-old Juni (Daryl Sabara) soon stumble upon their parents' deepest secret, and end up taking up their mantle to save the day, stop the bad guy, and make sure their parents are safe.
It was an interesting premise with plenty of silly humour and action for the kids, although there were a few strange turns along the way. The first movie has plenty of bonkers elements, most notably that the bad guy employs giant 'thumb-thumb' robots and mutates captured enemies into creatures called 'Fooglies'. But it only got stranger from there.
The second movie saw the kids travel to a mysterious island, where a mad scientist (played by Steve Buscemi) is creating miniature creatures, only for them to accidentally grow and rampage around the island. Not done there, they followed this up with Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over, where the family have to travel into a virtual reality universe to take on Sylvester Stallone, of all people.
After a few years went by, Spy Kids: All the Time in the World came out, with Sabara and Vega's characters becoming part of the supporting for a soft reboot. It doesn't seem like that one has gone onto continue the franchise, but millennials everywhere still have a soft spot for those original movies. So what exactly are the kids doing today?
We're only a couple of months out of it being 18 years old, which means that soon enough there are going to be adults walking around who are younger than the first movie. But instead of trying to get your head around that, check out what Vega and Sabara look like now, and what they've been up to over the years.
Alexa is now Alexa PenaVega, after marrying actor and singer Carlos Pena Jr. They had a son together in 2016, and have just this month announced that they're expecting their second child later this year.
Together, the couple run a YouTube channel, LexLovesLos, and she's had plenty of acting work since the series that brought her fame. In fact, over just five years she's appeared in 14 movies, six TV series (with a recurring role on Nashville), and six Hallmark TV movies.
Daryl Sabara, on the other hand, recently married singer Meghan Trainor. The pair apparently first met when she walked up to him and asked, "excuse me, are you Spy Kid?"
Daryl still acts, recently appearing in Netflix's Medal of Honor, as well as previously starring in John Carter, The Green Inferno, Machete, as well as various voice acting for television and video games.
Now, we all know what Antonio Banderas has been up to - but did you realise that Carla Gugino, who played Juni and Carmen's mother, is the same actress who played the mother in The Haunting of Hill House?
Who knows - maybe one day we'll get a proper family reunion...
