Todd Phillips, director of the upcoming Joker movie, has confirmed that the hotly anticipated film will be R-rated.

Phillips, who is known for directing The Hangover trilogy amongst other successful projects, shared the news in the comments section of his latest Instagram post.

Yesterday, the director posted a behind-the-scenes snap in which Joaquin Phoenix, star of the yet-to-be-released flick, can be seen facing a couple of mirrors while painting his face white.

Phillips took the opportunity to respond to enthused fans in the comments section. And so when one Instagram user about the film’s MPAA rating, the 48-year-old told them outright, "it will be Rated R".

"I've been asked this a lot. Just assumed people knew. Sorry," he added.

The thing is, though, the MPAA doesn't actually give their verdict on the rating until the movie is complete. Joker, however, is not yet entirely finished, with the finishing touched still being applied to the picture.

So, Phillips' answer might prove to have been a little hasty when the movie is finally released. But considering his aim from the outset was to make a film specifically for adult audiences, this seems unlikely.

While it will be far from the only R-Rated superhero flick - Watchmen, Logan and Deadpool were given the same rating - it does seem as though this film will be particularly dark - and twisted too.

Since the movie was announced, it was presented in a way that starkly contrasted more conventional comic movies.

In any case, the movie will be set in the 80s and centre around stand-up comic Arthur Fleck (played by Phoenix), delving into his journey into the Gotham City underworld.
