After years of clamouring for a follow-up, it looks as though Lethal Weapon fans have a fifth instalment to look forward to - and its only been 22 years in the making!

The franchise's last film was released back in 1998, and despite hearing through various Warner Bros. related grapevines that a sequel was in order, it's never quite came to fruition... well, up until now. During a Hollywood Reporter round table discussion, producer Dan Lin revealed that Lethal Weapon 5 is most likely on its way to a movie theatre near you.

Lin mentioned that there will be a fifth instalment to the buddy cop action film during the round table, disclosing that he would be taking part alongside other Hollywood producers. While Lin didn't work on the previous films (he's known for his work on Aladdin, It Chapter 2 and The Two Popes), he has links to the comedy franchise as he acted as an executive producer on the eponymous Fox TV show, which ended last year.

"We’re trying to make the last Lethal Weapon movie. And Dick Donner’s coming back. The original cast is coming back. And it’s just amazing. The story itself is very personal to him. Mel and Danny are ready to go, so it’s about the script," he said.

And according to Donner - who told CinemaBlend that Lethal Weapon 5 would be titled Lethal Finale - the fifth instalment will be "very dark". "We have a really great story. It IS dark… I wanted to end it on an emotional note," he said.

So while nothing is officially confirmed, we're pretty confident that Lethal Weapon will finally be returning to our screens sometime in the not too distant future. I mean, it's been long enough, surely!
