Fans of the cult classic horror movie Thirteen Ghosts are clamoring for a revival, but not in the form of a sequel or reboot.
Instead, they're calling for Netflix to create a series inspired by the spine-chilling movie, with each episode focusing on one of the thirteen ghosts featured in the original film. Relive the original movie trailer below:
Released in 2001, Thirteen Ghosts quickly gained a dedicated following for its unique storyline, terrifying ghosts, and innovative use of special effects. It may not have been the most financially successful horror movie in history, but - to this day - a cult fandom has remained faithful to the tragic tale.
Directed by Steve Beck and produced by Joel Silver, the film follows a family who inherits a lavish but eerie mansion from their late uncle Cyrus. Unbeknownst to them, the house is a machine designed to open the Ocularis Infernum, a portal to the afterlife.
Terror then ensues as the ghosts trapped within its walls are released one by one.
On a side note, the movie is also yet another underrated performance from actor Matthew Lillard.
Now, two decades later, fans are eager to explore the backstory and lore of each ghost in greater detail.
With streaming platforms like Netflix at the forefront of the entertainment industry, supporters have taken to social media to advocate for a series that delves deeper into the haunting world of Thirteen Ghosts.
The proposed series would consist of thirteen standalone episodes, each dedicated to a different ghost and their backstory. From tragic tales of love and loss to gruesome accounts of murder and revenge, the potential for storytelling is endless.
Here's a reminder of the thirteen ghosts that could become the focal point of each episode: The First Born Son, The Torso, The Bound Woman, The Withered Lover, The Torn Prince, The Angry Princess, The Pilgrimess, The Great Child and The Dire Mother, The Hammer, The Jackal, The Juggernaut, The Angry Princess, and The Broken Heart.
"13 ghosts. If they turned it into a Netflix show focusing on the original designs & backstories if the ghosts it would do sooo well," one X user recently tweeted.
A second added: "13 ghosts is still sooo good. Why hasn’t Netflix come out with a series that highlights the backstory of all the ghosts. Been saying this forever."
"Netflix should make a series of 13 Ghosts going into the different backstories of all the ghosts," a third tweeted.
Many people also had the perfect person to lead the project: Haunting of Hill House director Mike Flannagan.
"Seriously, there needs to be a 13 Ghosts spin off series... Say by Mike Flanagan... That explores the backstory of each of the ghosts," one X user wrote. "Where is this and why hasn't #Netflix done it yet? Seems perfect for a 13 episode series."
Some people even went to the effort of creating a Change.org petition, saying: "Netflix originals have taken the entertainment industry by storm [...] What we're proposing is a horror series that goes into the back stories of the ghosts in the film, perfect for the Halloween (or any) season."
I personally would love to see this become a reality. For some bizarre reason, I feel like this movie was a childhood staple for so many of us.
