Newly released images from an upcoming Lifetime drama have been slammed for appearing to show Meghan Markle "dying" following a car crash.

The images are from the upcoming Lifetime film Harry & Meghan: Escaping The Palace, which dramatizes the events that led to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepping down as senior royals back in 2020.

However, after the images were released on Friday, people have slammed the movie for depicting Meghan being involved in a car crash. Per The Independent, the scene is part of a dream sequence in the film.

You can see the official trailer for the movie below:

Meghan - played by Sydney Morton - is then seen lying in the car, surrounded by photographers, as husband Harry - played by Jordan Dean - attempts to open the car door.

Following the scene, Harry wakes up next to Meghan and their son, Archie.

But the images of the crash evoked memories of Harry's mother, Princess Diana, and her death in 1997. Diana died in a car crash in the Pont de l'Alma tunnel in Paris after attempting to flee the paparazzi.

This has led to people branding Lifetime's images as "deplorable" and "abhorrent".

One person responded by tweeting: "How utterly deplorable is this? Hollywood has zero shame in my opinion!"

A second wrote: "Pretending to be dying after a car crash is pure disrespectful and an insult to princess Diana."

"Absolutely abhorrent. It’s trading on Diana’s death in the most distasteful and tacky way," tweeted a third person.

Another person tweeted: "Lifetime is so disgusting for them biopics… Escaping the Palace has Meghan dying the same way as Princess Diana for what? Who thought this appropriate?"

In the movie, Harry tells Meghan: "I see you literally being hounded to death and I'm helpless to stop it." In the trailer, he is also heard saying: "I will not be bullied into playing a game that killed my mom."

This is Lifetime's third movie about Harry and Meghan, after 2018’s Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance and 2019’s Harry & Meghan: Becoming Royal.

Harry & Meghan: Escaping The Palace premiers on Lifetime on Monday, September 6.
