The final trailer for the upcoming Star Wars movie The Rise of Skywalker has dropped on social media, and it's teased some major bombshells about what direction the last movie of the sequel trilogy is going in.

So spoilers ahead for those fans who haven't managed to catch up yet, but The Last Jedi ended with some pretty major cliffhangers. Kylo Ren killed Supreme Leader Snoke and usurped control of The First Order, while Luke Skywalker sacrificed himself in a noble attempt to distract the enemies of the Alliance from the survivors of the rebellion, leaving Rey in control of the Millenium Falcon and the last legacy of the Jedi order.

Meanwhile, the final trailer for the new movie seems to show confirm that Emperor Palpatine is indeed alive and well; having somehow survived the destruction of the second Death Star in Return of the Jedi. Indeed, he seems to be lurking in the ruins of the battle station, manipulating events from behind the scenes to serve the dark side.

Not only that, but we also see Kylo Ren and Rey engage in a dramatic lightsaber duel in the rain, and caught a glimpse of her running through what looks suspiciously like the forest moon of Endor (are we going to be seeing the Ewoks again?) before a massive space battle with hundreds of rebel ships ensues. Not only that but at one moment C-3PO appears to say a sad goodbye to the main cast.

The movie was directed and produced by JJ Abrams, and stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, and Lupita Nyong’o, alongside original trilogy cast members Mark Hamill, Ian McDiarmid, Anthony Daniels, and Billy Dee Williams returning as Lando Calrissian (after Donald Glover's take on the character in the Han Solo prequel). The Rise of Skywalker is due to come out in cinemas on December 20.
