Growing up, a lot of us probably watched movies starring Disney princesses and wished that we could be one of them. Some of us wanted the rags-to-riches story of Cinderella, others wanted the adventurous lifestyle of Princess Jasmine, and, on a personal note, some of us just wanted to be as badass as Mulan.
But what would these women be like if they were in the real world? Ali Williams, a cosplayer and Disney fan, decided to follow this line of thinking in order to create a photo series of several princesses in real life jobs.
According to Williams, the photo series was intended to show the "true spirit" of the princesses we know from the films of our childhood:
"The true spirit of a princess has little to do with her glittering gowns and fairy godmother; the power of the princess is in her kindness, bravery, and sense of adventure. The trouble with fairytales is that the stories are set in patriarchal eras in fantasy lands. Critics attack Disney Princesses for being bad role models, when in fact, these characters are strong, inspirational role models.
"In honor of International Women’s Day, I organized a collaborative project with members of the Disney Princess cosplay community and talented photographers from the cosplay world. Together, we created a photo project that delves into the personalities of our favorite Disney Princesses and who they are as individuals."
