Spotted: a new Gossip Girl remake. Though the show's five-year run ended with Gossip Girl's identity finally being revealed, we evidently don't know everything there is to know.

It's just been announced that an extension of the popular CW series is officially in the works. Joshua Safran, Executive Producer of the original series, is writing it, but creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage will also have a say in how the new 10 episodes play out.

We're not sure what the plot will be, or if any of the original characters will be returning, but what we do know is that WarnerMedia's new streaming service, HBO Max, will be broadcasting the series.

HBO Max, which will have a beta launch later this year, hopes to be fully up and running next spring. The streaming service will have rights to the likes of Friends and The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, but it will also have originals like this reboot.

The original series - which ran from 2007 to 2012 - made the majority of its cast household names, including Leighton Meester, Blake Lively, Penn Badgley, Ed Westwick and Chace Crawford. And there are high hopes that the sequel will live up to this legacy.

The tagline for the new instalment reads:

"Eight years after the original website went dark, a new generation of New York private school teens are introduced to the social surveillance of Gossip Girl. The prestige series will address just how much social media - and the landscape of New York itself - has changed in the intervening years."

Joshua Safran spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the project:

"It's something we've been talking about — Josh, Stephanie and I — for a little bit, just in terms of, 'Is this something we want to explore?' We're all so in love with the original and had such an incredible time working on it, and it's such a big part of our lives. Then the stars aligned and we had availability to jump, and Warners, obviously, it's something they're very passionate about. It seemed like the best time and also the best way to do it."

"It's just a new look at this particular society in New York, the idea being that society changes constantly. So how has this world changed, how has social media and its effect changed? All of those things allow us to look at the world 12 years on as opposed to just redoing the story. None of us are interested in just redoing a story."

This series cannot come fast enough. I know I'll be waiting patiently for the latest string of rich, dramatic teens to hit my television screen. Until then, XOXO Gossip Girl.
