Once upon a time, there were two major video game consoles: Sega Genesis and Super NES. Seeking a mascot to rival Nintendo's popular Mario, Sega's braintrust came up with Sonic the Hedgehog. Forget about that pudgy Italian plumber! Here's a skinny blue hedgehog with attitude, that can blast through levels at supersonic speed!
Like Mario, Sonic had a series of classic side-scrolling games with a colorful cast (Dr. Robotnik, Tails, Knuckles). But unlike Mario, Sonic struggled to transition to the third dimension. The 3D Sonic games were poorly received, but gamers still have a lot of love for the little guy. Is it enough to watch a live-action animated movie about Sonic? Paramount Pictures hopes so!

In the film, Sonic is voiced by Ben Schwartz who you might know as Jean Ralphio from Parks & Recreation or Dewey from DuckTales. Jim Carrey plays Ivo Robotnik, aka Doctor Eggman, although I was hoping for Danny Devito (Come on, Paramount!). Fans wonder, will this movie be awesome, like a 2D Sonic game? Or will it be cringeworthy, like that 1993 live action Super Mario Bros. movie?
On Tuesday, Paramount released the trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog, (which features Coolio's 1995 hit Gangsta's Paradise!) and fans are divided. As of this writing, the video has two million views on YouTube, with 74,000 likes and 89,000 dislikes. Not great! Of course, you can't always judge a film from its trailer.
