Gordon Ramsay surprised his fans on Saturday after he revealed that he and his wife Tana had secretly welcomed their sixth child - but it turns out he'd dropped a pretty massive hint that everybody missed.

The celebrity chef, 57, and his wife, 49, shared their joyful news with their followers, revealing that he'd received an extra special birthday gift thanks to the birth of their new baby.

He shared a series of snaps of him and Tana in the hospital with the newborn, telling fans: "What an amazing birthday present please welcome Jesse James Ramsay, 7lbs 10oz whopper!! One more bundle of love to the Ramsay brigade!! 3 boys, 3 girls…. Done."

And while the post came as a surprise to most after the couple had kept the pregnancy under wraps, Gordon had actually alluded to the couple having another baby in the near future in September.

The couple, who have been married since 1996, are already parents to daughter Megan, 25, twins Jack and Holly, 23, daughter Matilda (known as Tilly), 21, and son Oscar, four. Prior to Oscar, the couple also had a stillborn son, Rocky.

Gordon revealed in an interview with People magazine in September that Tana was keen to have another child, not just because "it's an exciting thing" but because she just "doesn’t want Oscar growing up on his own."

"On his own? He’s at school every day, and he’s got his four siblings! So, oh man, watch that space... I’m f***ed," he quipped, adding: "I’m going to be at school celebrating sports day with a f***ing walker!

"'Hey, who's your granddad?' 'That's my dad, actually.' So I'm not too sure how many knee-hip replacements they'll get by the time they get 21, but I'm going to try," he joked.

And, while the couple didn't announce it at the time, Gordon's jokes were actually alluding to the fact that the pair's brood would be expanding in just over a month's time from when the interview was released.

Tana had also shared her wish to have a large family at the time, revealing it was because she's "one of four, Gordon's one of four, so it's sort of second nature to me."

Gordon also spoke highly of their older children, adding: "Jack’s a Royal Marine commando, off defending the country in some of the most extreme conditions.

"Megan’s an incredible police officer. Holly’s gone into fashion. Tilly’s studying at university for her degree. Tana and I came from a family with no degrees," he continued, adding that their youngest son Oscar is "a cool kid" and has "grown up rapidly because of his four older siblings."

The happy news of the birth of their sixth child comes after the couple heartbreakingly opened up about their pregnancy loss at 20 weeks in 2016. "Born with a strong heartbeat but too little to survive," Tana wrote of their son, whom they lovingly named Rocky.

According to Gordon, this devastating experience strengthened the family's bond and they even named their Cornwall home after Rocky and wore jewelry inscribed with his name in his honor.

"We wouldn’t have had Oscar had we not lost Rocky," he told the outlet. "There was no substitute - far from it - but it brought us a bond that you’d never experience in a normal situation."

Tana also shared a post marking baby Jesse's birth, admitting it had been a worrying time until he arrived. She wrote: "It’s been a nerve wracking 9 months but we’ve made it and we have been blessed with this little bundle. Ramsay family definitely complete. Jesse James Ramsay we love you so much."

Congratulations to the Ramsay family on their new baby!
