UK TV star Jeremy Clarkson has left fans horrified after making "disgusting" comments about Meghan Markle following the release of her docuseries on Netflix.
Harry and Meghan, a six-part series about the couple's relationship and their journey to leaving the Royal Family, has dominated the headlines since its release this month.
While many viewers were supportive of Prince Harry, 38, and Markle, 41, speaking out about their perspective on how they were treated by the press, others have been more critical about them airing personal matters on such a public platform.
One such critic is former Top Gear host Clarkson, 62, who shocked readers after wishing Markle be "paraded naked through the streets" while having "lumps of excrement" thrown at her.
Clarkson wrote in his column for The Sun: "I actually feel rather sorry for [Harry] because today he’s just a glove puppet with no more control over what he says or does than Basil Brush.
"Meghan, though, is a different story. I hate her. Not like I hate Nicola Sturgeon or Rose West. I hate her on a cellular level.
"At night, I’m unable to sleep as I lie there, grinding my teeth and dreaming of the day when she is made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant, 'Shame!' and throw lumps of excrement at her."
He added that "everyone" of his generation "thinks the same way".
Unsurprisingly, many people were horrified by the comments, recalling that Markle had previously spoken out about feeling suicidal from the abuse she had received in the past.
They commented: "Unfortunately, I’ve just seen some of Jeremy Clarkson’s column regarding Meghan Markle, published in The Sun. What a pathetic little man he is. I’m astonished that a national newspaper deemed it fit to print such vile misogyny. I hope there are repercussions."
Others commented: "Jeremy Clarkson has just proved that Meghan Markle hasn't been imagining a smear campaign against her. He's just blown the lid off the level of hate she's been up against. Conclusive now."
Another added: "Jeremy Clarkson has 2 daughters. I wonder how he would feel if someone said the vile things he said about Meghan to them, via a National Newspaper."
His own daughter, Emily Clarkson, also took to social media to distance herself from her father's comments, adding on her Instagram story: "My views are and have always been clear when it comes to misogyny, bullying, and the treatment of women by the media.
"I want to make it very clear that I stand against everything that my dad wrote about Meghan Markle and I remain standing in support of those that are targeted with online hatred."
Just days earlier, Emily had shared her thoughts on the way the tabloid press had treated Meghan and Harry, sharing a headline from the Daily Mail and telling her followers: "This publication, and many like it, are hellbent on DESTROYING this woman.
"Love her or hate her, (or like me feel a large amount of ambivalence towards someone who I don’t know and who’s actions barely affect me), the rhetoric around her ought to scare you. I don’t wanna hear loads of comments justifying this, trying to prove to me that she is bad or toxic or deserving of this… to my mind, no one deserves this. It is inhumane."
She explained that her defense of Harry and Meghan comes from the "appalling" treatment she has witnessed them receive, adding: "I genuinely feel concern for anyone who can look at how she particularly has been written/joked/spoken about and feel that it's justified. It's bullying on a mass scale and it drove a new mother to want to end her life."
Emily admitted she felt a "DEEP discomfort with our lack of humanity towards these two people" and felt that it was their right to have their say on matters, especially considering the hundreds of thousands of global articles written about them over the years.
Harry and Meghan is available to stream on Netflix now.

Jeremy Clarkson has written an apology to Meghan Markle following a column he wrote which launched a scathing attack on the actress.
The former Top Gear host, 62, had shocked fans with disturbing comments in his column for The Sun, such as wishing Markle be "paraded naked through the streets" while having "lumps of excrement" thrown at her.
The bizarre column went on: "I actually feel rather sorry for [Harry] because today he’s just a glove puppet with no more control over what he says or does than Basil Brush.
"Meghan, though, is a different story. I hate her. Not like I hate Nicola Sturgeon or Rose West. I hate her on a cellular level. At night, I’m unable to sleep as I lie there, grinding my teeth and dreaming of the day when she is made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant, 'Shame!'"
The 62-year-old had initially made a clumsy apology after receiving backlash, including from his own daughter, as he took to Twitter to say: "Oh dear. I’ve rather put my foot in it.
"In a column I wrote about Meghan, I made a clumsy reference to a scene in Game of Thrones and this has gone down badly with a great many people. I’m horrified to have caused so much hurt and I shall be more careful in future."
The article was removed from The Sun's website at the author's request, and the publisher also apologized for what was written after it received over 6,000 complaints.
Clarkson has since taken to Instagram to apologize for his column and told his followers that he emailed Harry and Meghan on Christmas Day.
"One of the strange things I've noticed in recent times is that whenever an MP or a well-known person is asked to apologize for something, no matter how heartfelt or profound that apology may be, it's never enough for the people who called for it in the first place," Clarkson began.
"So I'm going to try and buck the trend this morning with an apology for the things I said in a Sun column recently about Meghan Markle. I really am sorry. All the way from the balls of my feet to the follicles on my head. This is me putting my hands up. It's a mea culpa with bells on."
Clarkson continued: "Usually, I read what I've written to someone else before filing, but I was home alone on that fateful day, and in a hurry. So when I'd finished, I just pressed send. And then, when the column appeared the next day, the land mine exploded."
He went on to say he received harsh criticism even from those in his own family, and he apologized profusely for any harm that he caused by writing the poorly thought-out column.
Clarkson has disabled comments on the Instagram post as he seeks to put the entire thing behind him.

Following the release of his recent column about Meghan Markle - which readers dubbed "vile" - Jeremy Clarkson has been hit with over 6,000 official complaints.
The 62-year-old published an op-ed piece in The Sun in which he spoke about the former royal, explaining his overwhelming "hatred" towards her.
"I hate her," Clarkson wrote. "Not like I hate Nicola Sturgeon or Rose West. I hate her on a cellular level."
He then wrote that at night he is "unable to sleep" because he's too busy "dreaming of the day when she is made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while crowds chant, 'Shame!' and throw lumps of excrement at her", claiming "everyone who's [his] age thinks the same way."
But it didn't end there, he also went on to say that what makes him "despair" is that "younger people, especially girls, think she's pretty cool."
The former Top Gear star was immediately hit with backlash from social media users as well as other celebrities who slammed him for his "misogynistic" and "hateful" comments about the Duchess of Sussex.
Carol Vorderman, a British TV host, reposted a section of the controversial column, alongside a caption saying: "NO, Jeremy Clarkson. Not on any level, in any circumstance, is it OK to write this stuff about any woman and absolutely NO to 'everyone who's my age thinks the same.'"
Comedian John Bishop later reposted Vorderman's snapshot with his own caption, emphasizing his concern for Clarkson's words.
"WTF is this??? I don't care who you are or who you work for you simply can not write things like this. It is a blatant appeal to incite humiliation and violence on a woman. Some have excused it as dark humour. There is [no] joke here @JeremyClarkson and no excuse."
Nicola Sturgeon, another woman who was mentioned in the disgusting article, also spoke out on the issue during a broadcast, saying Clarkson's comments about the duchess were "beyond the pale".
As per Sky News, the First Minister of Scotland said: "I think what he said about Meghan Markle was deeply misogynist and just downright awful and horrible," she said.
"I have to say, taking a step back from it, my overwhelming emotion about guys like Jeremy Clarkson is pity. I mean, what is it that makes somebody so distorted by hate that they end up writing these things?" She continued: "I think that possibly gives an insight into Jeremy Clarkson and the kind of person he is.
"So maybe he just needs to take a step back from things and just think about life a bit more."
Clarkson's own daughter also criticized her father's opinion.
Taking to Instagram, Emily Clarkson emphasized her lack of support for the column, writing: "My views are and have always been clear when it comes to misogyny, bullying, and the treatment of women by the media.
"I want to make it very clear that I stand against everything that my dad wrote about Meghan Markle and I remain in support of those that are targeted with online hatred."
Now, a source from IPSO, the independent press standards organization, has revealed to BBC News, that they have received over 6,000 complaints about the op-ed.
They also said that the complaints are being assessed in accordance with their standard procedure.
Since the article was published on December 16, Clarkson has apologized for his "clumsy" comments.
He took to Twitter to tell his followers: "Oh dear. I've rather put my foot in it.
"In a column I wrote about Meghan, I made a clumsy reference to a scene in Game of Thrones and this has gone down badly with a great many people.
"I'm horrified to have caused so much hurt and I shall be more careful in future," he wrote.

Jeremy Clarkson's daughter Emily has condemned her father's comments about Meghan Markle after he was slammed for claiming he wanted to see her "paraded through the streets naked" and have "excrement thrown at her".
Two weeks after the first episodes aired, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's latest Netflix series - which documents the beginning of their relationship and their controversial decision to step away as senior royals - has polarized opinion.
Split into six separate episodes, Harry and Meghan are interviewed on their childhoods, careers, marriage, and new life in California following their exit from the UK.
The couple has received immense support from numerous famous faces, including the UK's This Morning TV show host Alison Hammond, who defended Meghan following claims from a royal expert that she'd "bullied" Buckingham Palace staff, per Express.
At the same time, the couple has been subject to internet trolls and disapproving comments from people like Piers Morgan and Jeremy Clarkson.
Morgan - who once claimed to be a "superfan" of Meghan and was even axed from Good Morning Britain for his negative comments on her - had stated that the Netflix docuseries was "worse than Keeping Up With The Kardashians," in a tweet.
Clarkson, however, chose to pen a column in The Sun about his vitriol for 41-year-old Meghan - writing that he hated her "on a cellular level" and that he was "dreaming of the day when she is made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant, 'Shame!' and throw lumps of excrement at her."
He appeared to be referring to Cersei's walk of shame in the TV series Game of Thrones with his comments about Meghan. In that scene, Cersei - who was accused of many heinous crimes and of having an adulterous relationship with her twin brother - had her head shaved and was forced to walk naked through the streets, while villagers threw excrement at her and shouted "Shame!"
In his column, the former Top Gear host added that his opinions were shared by most of the baby boomer generation, adding: "Everyone who's my age thinks the same way."
The Sun column has been widely criticized, and 62-year-old Clarkson has even been accused of inciting violence against Meghan.
Liverpudlian comedian John Bishop tweeted: "WTF is this ?? I don't care who you are or who you work for you simply can not write things like this. It is a blatant appeal to incite humiliation and violence on a woman. Some have excused it as dark humour. There is no joke here [Clarkson] and no excuse [sic]."
Countdown star Carol Vorderman, 61, also hit out at Clarkson, writing: "NO Jeremy Clarkson. Not on any level, in any circumstance, is it ok to write this stuff about any woman & absolutely NO to 'everyone who's my age thinks the same' No no no. We absolutely do NOT think the same. Listen to the noise Jeremy. The crowds are chanting 'shame on YOU.'"
Clarkson's daughter Emily, who is a podcaster, also lashed out at her father's column on her Instagram stories, writing: "My views are and have always been clear when it comes to misogyny, bullying and the treatment of women by the media.
"I want to make it very clear that I stand against everything my dad wrote about Meghan Markle and I remain standing in support of those who are targeted with online hatred."
Harry and Meghan's Netflix documentary - while evidently polarizing - offers viewers a real glimpse into the couple's behind-the-scenes decisions to step away from their roles as senior royals and become more financially independent.
After the first three episodes were released, Netflix recorded that they had received 81.55 million viewing hours in just one week, per The Guardian.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have not had an easy relationship with the media of late, and now that the couple has made the decision to step back from their royal duties, a number of media outlets have only intensified their scrutiny of them.
However, it's clear that Meghan and Harry still have some loyal support at home and abroad. If you want proof, then just take a look at the backlash incurred when an MSNBC guest made dismissive comments towards Meghan Markle.
Watch the moment Mather made her controversial comments below:

Making an appearance on the MSNBC Live segment, British reporter Victoria Mather, (who claimed to be a "Royals Watcher" for Vanity Fair magazine) stated: "I think what has really, really upset the British public is that Meghan Markle, who many people consider as only, you know, five clicks up from trailer trash, has actually tried to disrespect the queen, and the queen is the most respected person, most respected woman, in the world."
A number of Twitter users reacted with outrage to these words. For instance, @RottenAppleNews tweeted: "Did you say @msnbc has not or has now confirmed Meagan Markle gave Kate Middleton a knife? Also, how many clicks up from trailer trash is the royal family? I just want to make sure I have the proper frame of reference to know how deep Victoria Mather’s insult cut. [sic]"
Meanwhile, someone else going by the handle @IlonaNMarlie wrote: "Unfortunately, this is how quite a few British 'white women of a certain age' feel and some of the men. The younger generation: happy Harry is happy. These people are beyond disgusting and in no way represent the majority of us. Why these people are given a voice tho I've no idea. [sic]"
Recently, British talk show host Piers Morgan also called the couple 'spoiled brats':

Per Buzzfeed News, a spokesperson for Condé Nast, (Vanity Fair's parent company) told BuzzFeed News Mather she hasn't been employed with the magazine since 2018, despite her claims to the contrary.

Piers Morgan has already vented his frustrations towards the forthcoming Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Netflix special, and his views on the six-part docu-series are as scathing as expected from the broadcaster.
On December 1, the streaming service dropped the trailer for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's highly anticipated documentary series, titled Harry and Meghan.
The 59-second clip showed an array of romantic black-and-white photos of the couple and is meant to give viewers a teaser at the much-anticipated behind-the-scenes look into their split from the Royal Family.
In a timely fashion, the 57-year-old TV host, who has been vocal about the former royals, claimed that the pair are attempting to overshadow Prince William and Kate, Princess of Wales' trip to the United States.
Watch the Harry and Meghan trailer below:The couple has been working on the film project since stepping down as senior working members of the royal family and making a home for themselves in the United States.
In the trailer, the 38-year-old royal said: "No one sees what’s happening behind closed doors… I had to do everything I could to protect my family," while the 41-year-old Suits alum added: "When the stakes are this high doesn’t it make more sense to hear our stories from us?"
Over the years, the Piers Morgan Uncensored host has been one of Markle's biggest critics - even walking out during a dispute on Good Morning Britain when called out for his views by weatherman Alex Beresford.
So of course, he took to Twitter to share his opinion on the upcoming documentary. Morgan first re-shared the trailer and outrageously remarked: "OMG. This is already vomit-inducing," followed by a series of throwing-up emojis.
He then quickly shared a follow-up post, writing: "Imagine bleating about privacy then doing a kiss-and-tell reality series about your private lives? Then imagine preaching compassion as you trash your family again?"
"Then imagine releasing 1st trailer deliberately to ruin your brother’s big trip to America? Repulsive hypocrites," he furiously added, referring to the royal couple, both 40, who have traveled to meet with President Joe Biden on Friday (December 2) for the annual Earthshot Prize award ceremony.
Check out Morgan's tweets below:Despite Morgan's (predictable) resentment toward the couple, the trailer - which has no set release date - has been met with a barrage of positive comments from social media users.
The streaming giant shared on its page that the "global event," will explore "the span of their relationship, from the early days of the couple’s courtship to the challenges and controversies that prompted them to step back from the royal family".
They also revealed that the series will include interviews with family and friends "who’ve never spoken publicly about the couple’s relationship before".
It will also feature historians and journalists who examine how "media influenced Harry and Meghan’s relationship with the royal family and the Commonwealth at large".
The release date for Harry and Meghan's docu-series has yet to be revealed but Netflix has teased that it is "coming soon" to the streamer.
