Jeremy Renner was reportedly trying to save his nephew from injury when he was tragically crushed by a snowplow, leaving him with extensive injuries.

The Hawkeye star had been seriously injured when his own Pistenbully snowplow ran him over on New Year's Day, leaving him with several broken bones and needing surgery.

While the actor soon updated fans from hospital, the circumstances surrounding the terrifying incident were still unclear as an investigation began to find out how he had ended up being hurt.

According to a new update from a Nevada sheriff’s office incident report, the 52-year-old star was trying to stop his snow machine from sliding and hitting his nephew when he was pulled under the vehicle and crushed.

"Although the Pistenbully had some mechanical issues, it is believed based on our mechanical inspection that the parking brake would keep the Pistenbully from moving forward.

"When Renner attempted to stop or divert the Pistenbully to avoid injury to (his nephew), he was pulled under the vehicle by the track and run over," the report stated as per CNN.

“The Pistenbully rolled over him and continued down the road,” the report says. “He laid on the ground and focused on his breathing while (his nephew and others) rendered aid to him until medical personnel arrived on scene.”

The outlet also reported that the brake indicator light inside the snowcat’s cab was not functioning, and "mechanical issues may have been a factor in this accident."

The news comes almost a month after the actor was crushed by the 14,330 lb snow plow as he tried to clear the area around his home in northern Nevada.

Eyewitnesses claimed that he lost a lot of blood at the scene, before being airlifted to a nearby medical facility in order to stabilize his condition.

Two days later (January 3) during a press conference, local authorities confirmed Renner was run over by an "extremely large piece of snow removal equipment" weighing "at least 14,330 pounds".

Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam gave details of the accident, stating that Renner's "PistenBully got stuck" and even though the Marvel star was successful in getting it moving again, it "started to roll" while he was having a conversation "with a family member."

"In an effort to stop the rolling PistenBully, Mr. Renner attempt[ed] to get back into the driver’s seat of the PistenBully. Based on our investigation, it’s at this point that Mr. Renner [was] run over," Balaam said.

The sheriff then noted that while the accident was "tragic", no foul play was suspected, though the piece of equipment was initially taken in to check the accident wasn't caused by a mechanical malfunction.

He has since been released from hospital and is on his journey to recovery.
