Joaquin Phoenix references 'cow insemination' in emotional Oscars acceptance speech

After winning the Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of Arthur Fleck in Joker, Joaquin Pheonix used his emotional acceptance speech to draw attention to a number of issues including "cow insemination".

This came alongside an impassioned plea from the 45-year-old for humans to put their differences to the side and stop plundering the Earth's natural resources.

Listen to Pheonix's call out the brutality of the dairy industry below:

The actor said: "We go into the natural world and we plunder it for its resources. We feel entitled to artificially inseminate a cow and when she gives birth, we steal her baby. Even though her cries of anguish are unmistakable.''

"And then we take her milk that's intended for her calf and we put it in our coffee and our cereal.

And I think we fear the idea of personal change because we think that we have to sacrifice something to give something up but human beings, at our best, are so inventive and creative and ingenious, and I think that when we use love and compassion as our guiding principles, we can create, develop, and implement systems of change that are beneficial to all sentient beings and to the environment."

Beyoncé has been slammed for failing to give Phoenix a standing ovation at the Oscars:

Pheonix's remarks about cow insemination prompted quite the response on social media, and it was divisive, to say the least.

One Twitter user in favor of it wrote: "People just learned about the forcible impregnation of cows and the separation of calves from their mothers thanks to Joaquin Phoenix."

"People will now stop supporting dairy thanks to Joaquin Phoenix. This is how celebrities should act. This is a role model."

A second fan wrote: "Joaquin Phoenix is a living legend. He uses his large platform for the greater good, and to speak up on not only humanitarian issues, but issues regarding all species. He's a true vegan king, and we should all strive to be like him."

Meanwhile, a third Twitter user was so moved by the actor's words that they said they were doing to stop consuming dairy products:

However, not everyone was on the actor's side of the veganism debate.

One critic wrote: "Hey....Joaquin Phoenix, congrats you're the 1st person ever to incorporate the words 'artificially inseminate a cow' in your Oscar acceptance speech. You are also the first person to completely attempt to demoralize agriculture. Check your facts, you Joker [sic]."

"No one: Absolutely no one: Joaquin Phoenix: you see a mother cow. doing her thing. and you STEAL her MOTHERHOOD for what? your lucky CHARMS? your COCO PUFFS??" added a second.

But Mike Scully used Pheonix's speech as an opportunity for some light humor, writing: "Joaquin Phoenix f**ked up the cow joke I wrote for him."

This comes after the actor gave an equally impassioned speech about "systematic racism" at the BAFTAs last week.
