It's no secret that sunbathing has its risks. Whether it's something relatively innocuous like a mild case of sunburn, or something more serious like damage which could result in a potentially deadly condition like skin cancer.

Now, actor Josh Brolin has revealed that he burned his perineum while 'bun sunning'.

In case you're not familiar with the term 'perineum', it's the area separating the scrotum and anus in men and the vagina and vulva in women.

And on that note, if this is the first time you've heard of 'bun sunning' before, let me explain what that means too (although the clue really is in the name). It's a trend which involves lying on your back and curling your legs up into a fetal-like position to, quite literally, let the sun warm your buns.

The bizarre practice was promoted by influencer Metaphysical Meagan, who, earlier this month, claimed that it came with a number of benefits including helping to promote healthy libido and balanced sexual energy; and increasing creativity and creative output. Sounds great, right? Minus the whole, buns to the sun thing.

This probably shouldn't have been an easy sell, but it turns out it was, and a lot of people including Josh Brolin were inspired to give it a whirl. It was only afterward that he realized he'd made a terrible, terrible mistake...

Addressing his 2.8 million Instagram followers with the picture from Meagan's original post, the actor, 51, wrote:

"Tried this perineum sunning that I've been hearing about and my suggestion is DO NOT do it as long as I did. My pucker hole is crazy burned and I was going to spend the day shopping with my family and instead I'm icing and using aloe and burn creams because of the severity of the pain.

"I don't know who the f*ck thought of this stupid sh*t but f*ck you nonetheless. Seriously. #blackholefriday #blackholesun #severeperineumburns #santamonicafiredepartment #assholecare"

Poor Brolin. Talk about learning the hard way, but given that doctors warned against the practice after it was promoted, there's an argument to be made that the 51-year-old brought it upon himself.

So, on that note, it's probably a good idea to keep your buns out of the sun!
