Meryl Streep has revealed that she has split from her husband Don Gummer after 45 years of marriage.
A spokesperson for the star confirmed the news via a statement to Page Six, stating that - despite the separation - they "still care for each other."
"Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been separated for more than 6 years, and while they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart,' the statement read.
While this may come as a shock to some fans who recently saw the Don't Look Up actress wearing her wedding band at the 2023 Princesa de Asturias Awards in Spain on Friday, PEOPLE reported that the last time the couple were seen publicly together was back in 2018.
The pair initially got together back in 1978 through Streep's brother. At the time, the 74-year-old had been mourning the loss of her then-boyfriend, John Cazale, who passed away after a battle with lung cancer.
It was alleged that the pair instantly hit it off before exchanging vows just six months later though despite their lengthy relationship, there have only been a few instances when the actress opened up about the inner workings of it all.
In an interview with Vogue back in 2002, she gave us a glimpse into her marriage, opening up about the secret to staying together for so long.
According to The Devil Wears Prada star, the secret to their longevity was "goodwill and willingness to bend — and to shut up every once in a while.'
Good advice if I ever did hear any.
"There's no road map on how to raise a family: It's always an enormous negotiation," she continued before adding: "But I have a holistic need to work and to have huge ties of love in my life. I can't imagine eschewing one for the other."
Then in 2017, Streep made a rare comment about her husband while accepting the award for Best Actress, for her glorious performance in The Iron Lady.
"First, I’m going to thank Don because when you thank your husband at the end of the speech, they play him out with music," she started. "I want him to know that everything I value most in our lives you’ve given me."
The same year, it has been reported that the pair ended the romantic nature of their marriage.
The couple shares four children: singer-songwriter Henry Wolfe, 43, and actresses Mamie Gummer, 40, Grace Gummer, 37, and Louisa Jacobson, 30, whom they raised at their Connecticut home in the quiet, historic town of Salisbury.
Streep and Gummer join a long line of wild celebrity breakups this year including Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn, Joshua Jackson and Jodie Turner-Smith, Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner, and Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness.
