David Lee Roth, the original frontman of the rock band Van Halen, has announced his plans to retire early next year.

The rocker, 66, said his final performances will take place at the House of Blues in Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas at the start of 2022.

He will perform five solo shows kicking off with a concert on New Year's Eve and will perform his final show on January 8 after a decades-long career in the music business.

He broke the news to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, telling the publication: "I am throwing in the shoes. I'm retiring. This is the first - and only - official announcement. You've got the news. Share it with the world."

Roth added: "I'm not going to explain the statement. The explanation is in a safe. These are my last five shows."

The announcement comes nearly a year after guitarist and bandmate Eddie Van Halen died of cancer on November 6 at the age of 65.

Roth said: "I am encouraged and compelled to really come to grips with how short time is, and my time is probably even shorter."

The singer, also known as "Diamond Dave", said there will be 75 rehearsals for each of the final five shows.

Roth added: "We are bringing it in classic VH style. Alex and I are the only version, that was his message. There is no other variation. There is no torch being passed. There is no other side to this coin. This is classic, in-your-face Van Halen."

He also spoke of his late bandmate Eddie Van Halen and referred to him as his "beloved classmate."

The performer went on to add: "I've given you all I've got to give. It's been an amazing, great run, no regrets, nothing to say about anybody. I'll miss you all. Stay frosty."

Eddie Van Halen founded the band, named after him, in California in 1972, with Roth on lead vocals, his brother Alex on the drums, and Michael Anthony on bass.

Later that year, the group released its self-titled album, which would be followed by four more. Van Halen is renowned mostly for its hit song 'Jump'.
