Piers Morgan is never afraid to give his point of view. So it's no surprise that he's weighed in on the debate on Elon Musk's appointment as Time's Person of the Year for 2021.
The news that Tesla boss Musk had been awarded the honor was met with huge controversy. His history of alleged tax avoidance made the accolade particularly hard to swallow for many people - especially since Musk is currently the richest man in the world.
Former Good Morning Britain host Morgan addressed Musk's critics in his Daily Mail column.
He began by acknowledging that the SpaceX founder "isn't everyone's cup of tea," saying that he's "brash, arrogant, uncompromising, erratic, antagonistic, attention-seeing."
Despite this list of faults, Morgan clearly sees Musk as a kindred spirit, as he rounded off by writing "but then I could also be talking about myself!"
Morgan went on to praise the billionaire, who he described as a "swashbuckling maverick" and the "the single greatest entrepreneurial genius on planet Earth."
Though he didn't neglect to mention Musk's foibles - referring to reports of his despotic management style as well as conceding that he "should pay more tax," - Morgan ultimately concludes that "his heart is in the right place."
He also points out that Times Person of the Year is not necessarily an endorsement, and that Musk's liberal critics would do well to brush up on the history of the title.
"Judging by the outraged liberal reaction to his Time POTY announcement, the woke brigade believe he is even less deserving than previous holders of the title like Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin," Morgan writes.
Jimmy Kimmel and Senator Elizabeth Warren were among those members of the "woke brigade" that Morgan slammed for criticizing Musk.
"We need more people like him in the world, and less whiny woke wastrels currently throwing their toys out of their strollers because their bogeyman is finally getting the recognition that he deserves," the broadcaster added.
Morgan's column has divided critics. Unsurprisingly, many were quick to shoot him down.
"If he paid $6 Billion to the World Food Program like he said he would, THEN he can be person of the year," one wrote.
"Saving the earth? How is wasting billions going to space saving the earth?" commented another.
However, others were won over by his defense of Musk.
"Strangely Piers is making sense for once," tweeted one user.
"Well said, Piers," agreed another.
Meanwhile, one user had a more humorous response to the column.
"You're not getting a free Tesla!" they joked.
