It's the news you've been waiting for: Pokémon: The First Movie is getting an animated reboot on Netflix.

Now, as any Pokémon fan will attest to, the original movie is a gem in its own right, but now we're about to see it in a whole, new animated form thanks to Netflix. This comes 22 years after the original movie was released in 1998.

The new movie is going to air under the original movie's first name, Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution, and if the trailer is any indication of its plot, it's going to be quite similar to the original movie.

Watch the official trailer below:

On the off chance that you haven't seen Pokémon: The First Movie, let me explain. It follows what happens when scientists create a new Pokémon, Mewtwo, and as the title of the reboot suggests, it ain't pretty.

As per the new movie's trailer, Mewtwo is the most powerful Pokémon alive, and after he escapes from his creators, he vows to "strike back" against them.

The reboot's official synopsis reads: "When researchers discover and exploit a fossil of the Mythical Pokémon Mew, they unleash a creation that goes against the very laws of nature.

"The Legendary Pokémon Mewtwo was intended for use as a tool of destruction. But as Mewtwo becomes aware of its own dubious origin, it begins to resent its human creators and seeks revenge…"

If you haven't seen it yet, this is the official trailer for Detective Pikachu:

Needless to say, technology in the animation department has changed a lot since the late 90s, and the original movie's cartoony style of Pokémon will be replaced by CGI.

Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution was actually released last July in Japan, but this is the first time that it's going to be seen by English-speaking audiences, and thankfully, it will air next month!

Mewtwo Strikes Back will be available to stream on Netflix on February 27.
