Ricky Martin is seeking joint custody of his two children with his husband of six years, Jwan Yosef, according to the divorce filing.

The estranged couple announced on Thursday (July 6) that they have called it quits with their marriage in a joint statement to PEOPLE magazine.

"We have decided to end our marriage with love, respect, and dignity for our children and honoring what we have experienced as a couple all these wonderful years," they wrote.

"Our greatest desire now is to continue having a healthy family dynamic and a relationship centered on peace and friendship to continue the joint upbringing of our children, preserving the respect and love we have for each other," they added.

The 51-year-old 'Livin' La Vida Loca' singer filed a petition for divorce in the Superior Court of California on Wednesday (July 5), listing the date of separation as "TBD," per documents obtained by the outlet. Martin also cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the separation from the 38-year-old Syrian-Swedish artist.

The Grammy-winning musician - who is also a single father to 15-year-old twins Matteo and Valentino - is now seeking joint physical and legal custody of the couple's two children, Lucia, four, and Renn, three.

In addition to this, the petition reveals that Martin will pay spousal support to his former beau as well as his attorney fees. He has also "yet to determine the full nature and extent of the separate property assets and obligations of each party" based on their premarital agreement.

Per the publication, the Puerto Rican superstar noted that there are "no such assets or debts that I know of" for the court to split among the two parties.

The former couple's romance began after connecting on Instagram before meeting for the first time in London, England, back in 2015.

They made their relationship public a year later, at the 2016 amFAR Inspiration Gala, and even announced their engagement the same year. The pair then tied the knot in 2018, with the 'She's All I Ever Had' singer sharing the happy news of their marriage during an interview with E! News.

"I'm a husband, but we're doing a heavy party in a couple of months - I'll let you know," Martin said. "We exchanged vows, and we've swear [sic] everything, and we've signed all the papers that we needed to sign, prenups and everything."

Since news of their divorce emerged, it has been reported that Martin and Yosef were in an open marriage, according to the Daily Mail.

"Like many couples, Ricky and Jwan had an open relationship for most of their marriage," a source described as a close friend of the singer told the outlet. "This worked for them until it didn’t.

"In the end, they decided that it was best for them, their well-being, and for their kids, if they end it amicably," the insider added.
