Talk of who who will play the iconic character has been rife since Daniel Craig announced he would be stepping down.Roger Moore's son has weighed in on the topic of who should play the next James Bond, and he has explained why he believes it should not be a woman.

James Bond is one of the most iconic characters to ever hit the big screen as the MI6 agent tackles a multitude of enemies that are hellbent on taking over the world.

Getting to play the secret agent is an honor that only a handful of actors get to do, and much like Doctor Who, when one actor steps down, another takes his place.

Daniel Craig has portrayed the character since the mid-noughties when he burst onto the scene in Casino Royale, but his time as Bond came to an end in 2021 in No Time To Die.

The conversation quickly moved to who should take over the character, with many names being thrown around including those who believe that the part should be given to a woman.

As the debate rages on, the son of the third actor to play James Bond, Roger Moore, has weighed in and declared that he believes Bond should be played by a male.

Speaking to the Express, Geoffrey - also known as Jaffa - was asked whether the part should be played by a woman, to which he responded: "Well, then it's no longer James Bond. I mean, she could be 006, 008, or 009."

During the latest Bond movie, No Time To Die, Lashana Lynch took over the role of 007 following Bond's retirement and Jaffa believes that this caused "confusion".

"In the last Bond I think this was the confusion," he explained. "That she [Lashana’s character Nomi] was 007 and then said, ‘I’ve got to give it back to Bond. It’s his number'."

Jaffa explained that he is open to a female version of Bond, but in a standalone series separate from the 007 franchise.

"Maybe there will be a 'From the filmmakers of James Bond comes Jane or Jemima Bond' or whatever," Jaffa said.

He doubled down on his claim by stating that "Ian Fleming's Bond" should be played by a man, and also added that he believes women make convincing spies, citing Charlize Theron in Atomic Blond, stating that she "pulled it off".

As speculation grows on who should take over as Bond, Idris Elba appeared to put himself out of the running as he spoke at the World Government Summit in Dubai in February.

Via the Independent, he said: "You know, a lot of people talk about another character that begins with ‘J’ and ends with ‘B,’ but I’m not going to be that guy. I’m going to be John Luther. That’s who I am."
