The headline fight from UFC 229 in October was overshadowed when both MMA fighters got into a brawl after the winner had been decided. Rather than it being a sore loser striking out against their opponent, it was actually victor Khabib Nurmagomedov who launched an attack alongside other members of his team.
During the scuffle, Irish fighter Conor McGregor was attacked within the octagon by two men while Khabib jumped from the fencing into the crowd, apparently in response to insults to his family, religion and country from one of McGregor's teammates.
Since then, we've seen various footage of the incident shared from different angles, but none of us realised that there was a very famous face in the crowd.
In an interview with the Russian channel Match TV, Nurmagomedov recently spoke about what it was like to have his status as a fighter and celebrity heightened.
"I wouldn't call myself a superstar, I don’t feel like a superstar," he said. "If you think about it too much, it’s very bad… it can change your outlook on life".
However, it wouldn't be too far to call him a superstar, considering he's been hanging out with Leonardo DiCaprio. In the interview, Khabib also revealed that he watched a PSG football match in November, where he met up with DiCaprio, as well as many other celebrities in the crowd.
"Honestly, I didn't recognize them [celebrities], apart from Leonardo DiCaprio… He's a big fan [of MMA]," Nurmagomedov said, according to state-funded news channel RT. It was there that he discovered not only that the actor was present at the match, but he was almost right in the thick of the fight.
"He told me, 'I was sitting 5 meters away [when you jumped the cage], you nearly landed on me!'," Khabib added.
After meeting the actor in Paris, Nurmagomedov explained that DiCaprio had invited him to dinner.
"It was interesting for me how he would sit there [amid so many people]," Nurmagomedov said of their meal. "He's a regular guy, but it was surprising to me, when people came up to him for a photo, he said 'I don't take photos.' I asked why, and he said it's not possible to make everyone happy."
He continued: "He said he only takes photos with kids… with everyone else, it's not possible. That surprised me, but in general, he's a regular guy."
In the same interview, Khabib spoke about what it was like getting a call from Russian President Vladimir Putin straight after the fight.
"I was more surprised when called me right after the fight,I was pleasantly surprised," he said. "It's nice, you know, when the head of state phones you and praises you for your efforts… especially when I was sitting in the locker room, surrounded by security staff who were protecting me from 20,000 unhappy fans".
For his actions at UFC 229, Nurmagomedov is currently facing a 9-month suspension from the sport, although it may be reduced to six months if he takes part in an anti-bullying campaign.
