For many MMA fighters, losing a match with just seconds on the clock is often painful enough, but for Alistair Overeem, he also had to deal with the fact his upper lip had just been savagely split.

In the closing round of their fight at UFC DC last night, Jairzinho Rozenstruik secured a TKO win out of nowhere after defeating Overeem with just seconds left on the timer. The bout was highly anticipated,  but nobody would have predicted the gruesome end to the closing fifth round.

With only eleven seconds left on the clock, Rozenstruik landed a brutal right hook that knocked Overeem into the cage and exploded his lip in the process.

Check out the surprising shot in the video below - you've been warned:

The hard right hand secured the Surinamese fighter with his tenth consecutive MMA win, and his fourth win in the UFC - all coming via knockout.

The fight had a frosty start, as 31-year-old Rozenstruik refused to touch gloves prior to the bell ringing, leaving Overeem with outstretched arms.

In yet another stroke of bad luck for Overeem, it was revealed following the match that he would have won on the points compiled in the first four rounds if he could have survived to the buzzer. However, clearly fatigued from a slow-paced fight, Rozenstruik's explosive right-hand was enough to put him down in the final seconds.

Check out the moment an MMA fighter won a fight with a rolling thunder kick:

After managing to get back to his feet, referee Dan Miragliotta ended the match with just FOUR seconds left on the clock.

Following the match, Overeem has taken to Twitter to confirm that he received stitches and that he thinks the ref's stoppage came a little too quick, writing: "Getting stitched up. Lip not [too] sexy at the moment.. a little bit a fast stoppage if u ask me - but hope u guys enjoyed the fight"
