A set photo from The Batman has given fans their first look at Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne.

As per the Evening Standard, the 33-year-old actor who rose to fame playing Edward Cullen in the Twilight series was cast in the iconic role when Ben Affleck stepped down last year. The new movie is being filmed in London and images snapped from the set have now surfaced on social media.

Watch as Ben Affleck discusses ending his reign as Batman:

The pictures feature a man believed to be Pattinson on a motorbike.

While some have speculated that this could be a stunt double and not Pattinson himself, these pictures provide an exciting insight into what his portrayal of the character might look like.

One Twitter user wrote: "If this is indeed a Robert Pattinson stunt double I theorize that Bruce Wayne sneaks into a crime scene and a motorcycle chase scene begins with him and the police."

But some fans simply took the pictures as an opportunity to freak out about Pattinson playing the role. One wrote: "ROBERT AS BRUCE WAYNE???$& THIS IS NOT A DRILL THIS IS NOT A DRILL THIS IS REALLY HAPPENING."

Others said that it had to be Pattinson as they appear to show him having "first look" pictures taken.

"Looks to be photographers their maybe taking some first look pics?" questioned one Twitter user. "Also looks like a film that we could see alot [sic] of it like this with fan pics."

When interviewed by Variety about taking on the role of Batman, Pattinson said that the character has been "in [his] mind for a while," explaining: "It's such an absurd thing to say. I sort of had an idea to do it, and I'd been prodding Matt. He didn't accept any prods. I kept asking to meet him."

The actor then revealed that when he tried on the Batman costume for the first time it was a "transformative" moment, saying: "You do feel very powerful immediately. And it's pretty astonishing, something that is incredibly difficult to get into, so the ritual of getting into it is pretty humiliating. You've got five people trying to shove you into something."

The Batman is set to be released in June 2021.
