The Last Of Us episode three has shattered hearts across the globe, as well as being hailed as one of the best hours of television ever.

Spoilers ahead!

The Last Of Us is the latest series from HBO proving that they really don't miss when it comes to captivating TV, with people branding it as "perfect" after the first episode.

The series has been an instant hit with both fans of the game that it is based on, and those learning about the story for the first time.

It has been largely praised for how closely it sticks to the game both visually and in its narrative, with some scenes being recreated shot for shot.

For those who are unaware, the story revolves around Joel and Ellie on their journey through a world that has been destroyed by a pandemic that has turned millions of people into fungi-controlled creatures.

The latest episode 'Long, Long Time' moves away from Joel and Ellie and focuses on Bill and Frank as they go through their lives together.

While the story deviates from the games, many have agreed that it was for the best as it fleshed out the world in an incredibly heartbreaking way.

Check out the trailer for season one of The Last of Us:

Frank (Murray Bartlett) and Bill (Nick Offerman) meet in the usual way during the apocalypse, with a gun being pointed and an incredible amount of suspicion. A classic meet-cute.

Bill is a prepper and has created a neighborhood that is secure and surrounded by traps so he can live in relative safety. Frank falls into one of Bill's holes and well, the rest is history.

The next hour felt more like an Oscar-worthy film than an episode of an HBO series as the audience was taken on a journey of love.

The two men fall in love with each other, and we watch as they grow old, fight, paint, and drink wine in a world that has collapsed around them.

Without wanting to give too much away, the episode concludes in a gut-wrenching way yet is oddly heartwarming as it shows that true love conquers all.

It seems like the episode struck a chord with many who watched it, with one person tweeting: "The last of us writers were like 'hey joel needs a car. what if we write the most touching and heartbreaking hour of television in the world'.”

Others who felt safe in the knowledge that they knew where the narrative was heading due to playing the game were left shocked as one person found out: "The Last of us writers making the show sadder than the game and not warning us."

A third person added: "The Last of Us episode 3 will probably go down in history as one of the greatest episodes of TV ever made."

The creator of The Last Of Us Neil Druckmann teased fans by saying: "Why is everyone crying? That was the happy episode!", so we dread to think how our hearts will be ripped out in future installments.

This episode was hauntingly beautiful and we can't wait to see where The Last Of Us heads next!
