Will Smith has revealed that both he and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith have had sexual relationships with other people during their marriage.

Last year, the couple's union made headlines after rapper August Alsina claimed that he had engaged in a relationship with Jada with Will's permission.

Jada initially denied the claims, but when she and Will took part in an interview for her web show Red Table Talk, she said that an "entanglement" had occurred.

In a new interview with GQ, Will opened up about the pair's unconventional take on marriage.

Admitting that while their marriage was initially monogamous, they later decided to open it up after they were "both miserable and clearly something had to change."

What's more, Will made it clear that it wasn't just Jada who explored other romantic avenues during their marriage, as he revealed that he, too, engaged in other sexual relationships.

"Jada never believed in conventional marriage. Jada had family members that had an unconventional relationship. So she grew up in a way that was very different than how I grew up," he explained.

"There were significant endless discussions about, what is relational perfection? What is the perfect way to interact as a couple? And for the large part of our relationship, monogamy was what we chose, not thinking of monogamy as the only relational perfection."

He went on: "We have given each other trust and freedom, with the belief that everybody has to find their own way. And marriage for us can’t be a prison.

"And I don’t suggest our road for anybody. I don’t suggest this road for anybody. But the experiences that the freedoms that we’ve given one another and the unconditional support, to me, is the highest definition of love."

When news of Jada's "entanglement" with Alsina came to light last year, she explained what had occurred in her own words.

Touching on her brief split from Will, she said at the time: "We decided we were going to separate for a period of time and you go figure out how to make yourself happy and I will go figure out how to make myself happy."

"From there, as time went on, I got into a different kind of entanglement with August," she added.

For his own part, Will has said that it is a "miracle" that he is still speaking to his wife after her affair.

Discussing his wife’s affair with Alsina, 51-year-old Will said last year: "I wasn't sure I was ever going to speak to you again. The fact that I’m speaking to you again is a miracle.

"[Marriage] ain’t for the weak at heart. There's just certain things that you have to go through… I sure wish it could be all magic and miracles."

Discussing her doubts over whether the relationship could ever be repaired, Jada added: "I'm just happy 'cause I definitely believe that you and I, we never, ever, ever thought that we would make it back."

Revealing further details of the relationship with Alsina, Jada described her connection with Alsina as a "different kind of entanglement" to what she had experienced with her husband.

Will, reflecting on the state of their marriage at that time, declared: "I was done with your a**. I was done with you," before adding: "Marriages have that though. We decided that we were going to separate for a period of time and you go figure out how to make yourself happy and I’ll try to figure out how to make myself happy. I really felt like we could be over."

The pair tied the knot in 1997, and have two children, son Jaden, 23, and daughter Willow, 20. Will also has son Trey, 28, from a previous marriage to Sheree Zampino.
