Whether you choose to chalk it down to humankind's inherent narcissism or pure creativity, you can't deny that we, as a species, are obsessed with the future. The fantasy and sci-fi genre has dominated popular culture since its very conception, and some seminal works of literature, film and television have come out of it.
I mean, are you even living in 2017 if you don't watch Game of Thrones?
Personally, however, the most compelling portrayals of the future come from the 80s and 90s. Yes, they are like rare novelties now, what with their outdated graphics and avant-gardism, but there's nothing better than seeing hover-boards and flying cars galore, all through the lens of the manic, creative minds of those two special decades.
The Fifth Element, in particular, is a cult classic for a reason; set in the 23rd century and featuring everything from a strange breed of aliens called
Mondoshawans to flying taxicabs, it's delightfully eccentric, if not downright mind-boggling. The 1997 film also boasts a stellar cast, including the likes of
, Gary Oldman, Chris Tucker and Milla Jovovich, and given that the film was released 20 years ago, this year, we thought it would be a good time to revisit the cast members and see what they look like two decades on.
1. Bruce Willis as Korben Dallas
2. Milla Jovovich as Leeloo
3. Chris Tucker as Ruby Rhod
4. Gary Oldman as Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg
5. Charlie Creed-Miles as David
6. Sir Iam Holm as Father Vito Cornelius
8. Maïwenn Le Besco as Diva Plavalaguna
I think it's safe to say that the cast from The Fifth Element look
a lot
different now than they did back then, and most of that is due to the fact that they're not starring in an incredibly strange dystopian film predicated around the survival of Planet Earth.
