An 82-year-old grandmother and award-winning bodybuilder beat up a burglar less than half her age after he broke into her home in New York state, Fox News reports.

According to Willie Murphy, the 28-year-old intruder broke into her home at about 11pm on Tuesday evening. He had shown up at his would-be victim's door in a bid to convince her to let him in, claiming he was unwell.

Watch as Willie Murphy describes the moment she battered the intruder:

Not to be duped by the burglar, the 82-year-old - who can still deadlift 225 lbs despite being five feet tall and weighing just 105 lbs - refused to let him inside. And so he broke in. A decision he will have instantly regretted because as Murphy says: "I'm alone and I'm old, but guess what? I'm tough."

"I hear a loud noise," Murphy told WHAM-TV. "I’m thinking, what the heck was that? The young man is in my home. He broke the door."

"I picked up the table, and I went to work on him," she continued. ‘The table broke." "And when he’s down," she added, "I’m jumping on him."

Murphy then grabbed a bottle of shampoo as her next weapon of defence. "I grabbed the shampoo," she recalled. "Guess what? He’s still on the ground. In his face, all of it, the whole thing."

Next, she turned to a broomstick. "I got the broom. He’s pulling the broom. I’m hitting him with the broom."

When the authorities arrived, she said the first responders wanted to take selfies with her and she received a hero's welcome when she returned to her local YMCA.

Murphy, who won first place in her division at the World Natural Powerlifting Federation World Championships in 2014, concludes by saying: "He picked the wrong house to break into."
