In less than seven days, we're going to have learned a lot more about the current political climate in the United States of America. Two years ago, Donald Trump pipped Hilary Clinton to the post for a seat at the Oval Office, but in 2018 the American Mid-Term Elections take place November 6, and everything seems up for grabs.
The intervening 24 months have been full of twists and turns, executive orders and protests, hints of conspiracy and plenty of Kanye West shenanigans, but it's only a matter of time before we see how the American people have responded to all that. It could be a historical vote, folks.
But enough about politics: let's talk about food. In these most fraught and volatile of times, it might be comforting to curl up underneath a blanket and eat a ton of Ben & Jerry's. But even that previously comforting tub won't save you from political responsibility, as Ben Jerry's have come out with a new flavour that's a sweet support for equality.
You might not know this, but similar to Chick-fil-A, Ben & Jerry's haven't exactly sat on the fence when it comes to fraught political debates: there's a whole page on their site detailing all the causes they believe in, including racial justice, LGBT equality, and climate justice.
So, it's little surprise that they're all about introducing more ways to fight inequality around the United States, and indeed the world. Introducing the new Pecan Resist flavour of Ben & Jerry's, filled with white and dark fudge chunks, fudge-covered almonds, walnuts, and (of course) pecans.
It's made as an ice cream opposing the Trump administration, and the ice cream makers were quick to make sure that everyone knew that this was way more than subtext.
"Alongside all those nutty chunks, this pint packs a powerful message under its lid: together, we can build a more just and equitable tomorrow. We can peacefully resist the Trump administration’s regressive and discriminatory policies and build a future that values inclusivity, equality, and justice for people of color, women, the LGBTQ community, refugees, and immigrants."
Ben & Jerry's are throwing their support behind four organisations helping to fight for equality all over the world.
Color of Change designs campaigns that support racial equality, Honor the Earth works on climate change issues, Neta is an independent media platform supporting people of colour along the Texas-Mexico border and Women’s March is "committed to harnessing the political power of diverse women and their communities to create transformative social change".
Ben & Jerry's will reportedly be donating $25,000 to each of these four organisations, and they've also included a form on their website that allows people to support these organisations as well, and stay up to date with their various campaigns.
For those of us who like ice cream as much as equality, Pecan Resist can be found in local Ben & Jerry's scoop shops, while if you want a pint of the stuff, you can find such deliciousness on the Ben & Jerry's website for $6.99. Not too bad for the delicious taste of equality, huh?
