A cosmetic surgeon has revealed the one thing that will age you like crazy - and let's just say it's something we're all guilty of.

In the age of 10-step skincare routines, chemical peel facials, and Botox, many of us are exploring methods to level up our beauty regimes. But with so many options, it can be a bit overwhelming.

Throw in the added pressure from social media as well as the natural desire to chase that youthful glow, and it can be difficult to figure out what really is best for your skin. But thanks to Dr. Daniel Barrett, we now know a few simple things we can do to reduce the effects of aging.

In a new video shared to the platform, the skin professional shared some non-cosmetic things one can do to slow down the signs of wrinkles, dark spots, and sagging skin before sharing one component everyone needs to eliminate in their lives because it ages people way beyond their years.

When asked what will slow down the signs of aging, he responded: "Sleeping... a lot of health-related things like exercise, [wearing] sunscreen, not smoking, and decreasing your sugar intake will slow down the signs of aging," he said in the clip, before adding that other things such as a good skincare routine can also have positive benefits.

He was also asked the golden question, which was: "What will age you the fastest" to which he replied back with: "Stress."

But why?

Stress has a track record of causing wrinkles and fine lines, as well as triggering other skin health conditions such as conditions like hives, psoriasis, and eczema.

According to Business Insider, a study found that chronic stress can have negative effects on skin aging and cause wrinkles to form. That's because stress causes inflammation and impairs the body's ability to repair itself, which means that cell turnover slows down, leaving you with dull, sagging skin.

Long-term stress can also lead to insulin resistance, which can have an effect on collagen production, which is a crucial element to maintaining skin elasticity.

Dr. Barrett also added that stress can also impact your gut health, which is directly linked to skin health as well as metabolic, brain, and immune health, so it's pretty important that you start limiting it immediately.

Getting a good night's sleep and eating a healthy and well-balanced diet is crucial to combat these problems, and small tips like making sure you're well-hydrated as well as trying to limit stressors can have a drastic impact overall.

And of course, make sure your skincare regime complements your skin type and keep it consistent.
