One man on a bike slowed the People's Convoy trucker protest in Washington DC to a crawl on Saturday.

A video clip of the cyclist went viral on Sunday morning, with many residents praising him for holding up the protests that have been frustrating them over the past few weeks.

The convoy - which is a spin-off of the Canadian trucker protests which made headlines earlier this year - arrived in the US capital earlier this month to protest pandemic restrictions, The Guardian reports.

Made up of a long line of semi-articulated trucks, recreational vehicles, and cars, the convoy planned to force restrictions to be lifted by disrupting traffic in the notoriously gridlocked capital.

However, it was the convoy that was frustrated on Saturday when a lone cyclist cycled slowly in front of the line of trucks. Despite the deafening chorus of horns behind him, the man refused to speed up, bringing the entire convoy to a painfully slow crawl.

In another video clip, the man - who is cycling deliberately slowly - is approached by a truck driver who pulls up beside him and asks: "Hey, what are you doing? You got a bunch of trucks behind you."

But the man is unfazed, saying: "I'm sorry I can't hear you, it's too loud," before carrying on his relaxed cycle.

Direct action group ShutDownDC tweeted the video with the caption: "Big powerful convoy slowed down by… a single bicyclist." They added the hashtags "DC Means Don't Come" and "Convoy Go Home".

The cyclist won widespread praise on Twitter for holding up the convoy, with over 10,000 users liking ShutDownDC's tweet, and many people taking to the comments section to congratulate him.

"Heroes sometimes wear pants clips," tweeted one supporter, while another agreed, writing: "Heroes wear helmets! (And masks when needed, and get vaxed)."

Another congratulated the cyclist for showing the convoy how inconveniencing their protest was, writing: "p***ed them off with a dose of their own medicine. The best kind of defeat."

However, some users were less convinced and thought the cyclist may actually have made the situation worse.

"How did the cyclist defeat the convoy? Isn't it the point of the convoy to slow down traffic? The cyclist just made traffic even slower, which makes the traffic situation even more frustrating," they tweeted.
