Facebook Messenger is about to get a major update - and it's something users have been asking for for years.

The social media site, owned by Meta, has been around since 2004, but every so often it gets an update to give users more of what they want.

Messenger has been around since 2008, initially being known as Facebook Chat, before getting its current name in 2010, later even getting its own standalone app.

Now, one of the features users have been asking for the most has also been added to a new update of the messaging system.

While Facebook users may have moved away from the days of creating entire albums of photos from nights out, one thing they've been desperate to do is be able to share those images over chat, too.

Now, it looks like they've finally got their wish after years of asking, as Meta has revealed its new Messenger update will allow users to send each other HD photos, meaning the quality of the snap won't be compromised.

The new update will mean users are able to send "clearer, crisper photos in your chats", if they select the HD toggle before sending their photo to their friend.

If you're sending more than one HD image in one fgo, all you'll need to do is tap on them and then send them off.

The new function will no doubt be a very welcome change for those who rely on Messenger to send pics back and forth, after people previously joked that it looked like the images had been taken using a "potato" by the time they reached their intended recipient.

Meta also announced other updates coming to Messenger as well as better quality photos, revealing that users will be able to create Shared Albums with friends on the app, too.

It said in a press release that users can make an album in a group chat by selecting photos in the app and clicking 'Create Album', or pressing and holding a photo in the chat to bring up the same option.

Once the album is created, the user can then simply select photos and click 'Add To Album', and all members of the group will be able to view, add, delete, or download photos from that album.

The size of files that users can send via Messenger has also been increased in the new update, allowing for up to 100MB to be sent, with supported formats including PDF, Word documents, or Excel spreadsheets.

Meta says the change will mean users "no longer have to rely on email to send large files".

One final upgrade coming in the new rollout is that users will be able to add new contacts using a Messenger QR code, making it far easier to find and connect with a particular person on the app.
