A farmer has taken to TikTok to explain why we've been storing our eggs wrong.
Noah Young, the owner of The Shiloh Farm in Nebraska, has claimed that eggs should actually rest the pointy end down when they are stored in the fridge.
He explains that this is because there's an air cell at the other end of the egg, which exists to protect the yolk from a number of undesirable bacteria.
Watch Young's viral TikTok below:Young explains: "First things first, every egg has a pointy end and a blunt end and that blunt end actually has something called an air cell and this air cell actually acts as a buffer, keeping bacteria, such as Salmonella, away from the yolk."
He adds: "If you store your eggs with the blunt side down, that air cell will eventually start to lift up with gravity, bringing the bacteria closer to the yolk. If you keep it pointy side down, that air sac will actually stay right at the top, and keep your egg fresh for longer."
Unsurprisingly, Young's video has gone viral, prompting countless people to wonder how they could have been storing their eggs wrong for such a long time.
Reacting to the revelation, one TikTok user wrote: "so who they sell us our eggs wrong?"
A second added: "Eggs don't last long enough around my house for that to matter. Good to know though."
A third wrote: "Listening to this as I walk to my fridge and turn all my eggs upside down."
However, not everyone who viewed Young's video believed that eggs should even be kept in the fridge.
One TikTok user wrote: "They shouldn't be in the fridge that's for sure."
A second added: "I learned yesterday that other countries don't refrigerate their eggs and my mind is still blown."
Meanwhile, a third simply questioned whether or not people refrigerated their eggs.
They wrote: "do you refrigerate your eggs? i do but my mom doesn't [sic]."
What do you think? Should eggs be stored the pointy way down, and more pressingly, should they even be stored in the fridge?
