A man has revealed the impact 12 energy drinks had on his body after consuming the beverages in 10 minutes.
Energy drinks have become somewhat of a staple for many people in the last two decades. With brands like Red Bull and Monster becoming popular around the world, many hard-working adults and sleep-deprived students often turn to the caffeine and taurine-filled drinks for a much-needed boost.
However - much like alcohol or smoking - there have also been many warnings and cautions released about consuming these types of drinks. In fact, some countries have introduced preventative measures when it comes to energy drinks, with the UK banning the sale of these beverages to children under the age of 16.
Now, a doctor has recalled what happened to a videogamer after he chose to consume 12 energy drinks in 10 minutes.
Check out the story below:Dr. Bernard Hsu - a clinical pharmacist and popular YouTuber with over 2.6 million subscribers on his Chubbyemu channel - tells his viewers that the gamer downed the drinks as a stunt in a bid to impress his coworkers.
"These cases are patients who I, or my colleagues have seen." the video's description reads.
"A man drank 12 energy drinks in 10 minutes. This is what happened to his organs," Dr. Hsu says in the video.
In the resurfaced video, Dr. Hsu reveals that the gamer was a 36-year-old male with no diagnosed medical history, identified only as "JS".
Commentating over a reenactment of the incident, Dr. Hsu says that after chugging the drinks, JS was admitted to the ER with "breakthrough abdominal pain" the next day. By this point, he was unable to hold down any food or water and his breathing had become "stressed".
Dr. Hsu explains that JS had consumed over 1lb of sugar in just 10 minutes - which ultimately resulted in the onset of acute pancreatitis.
In fact, per the New York Post, doctors soon learned that JS's pancreas had begun the process of "digesting itself".
Eventually, the fluid that had built up in JS's pancreas became infected - in turn, infecting his blood - and the gamer's kidneys and liver started to shut down.
Doctors opted to treat and counteract these symptoms by placing JS on IV fluids and antibiotics. Fortunately, these were successful, and JS was eventually discharged.
Dr. Hsu concluded his video by explaining that, if you are young and healthy, then a can of energy drink once in a while probably isn't going to have any adverse effects on you. However, "if you start chugging multiple cans back-to-back, then bad things are probably going to happen".
He explains that too much caffeine will cause your heart to race and make you become shaky and jumpy. But Dr. Hsu says that energy drinks are more than just caffeine and that what experts do know is that there "might be an association with excess energy drink consumption and pancreatitis."
Eventually, Dr. Hsu says the experience was a "wake-up call" for JS.
