Have you ever looked at a pair of men's underwear and wondered what the hole on the front is for?

There is one thing that will immediately come to mind, but apparently, there is another reason for it as well.

As a man, I've never really given much thought to my underwear other than what cool patterns it has on it.

Now I think about it, getting funny underwear pleases nobody but myself but I'll continue to do it.

I must confess that I don't buy underwear without the hole in the front because you know, ease of access when nature calls.

This is getting weirdly personal... But what is the reason for the hole?

To start things off, a discussion was had on Reddit where men attempted to figure it out.

Of course, the main point was that it's easier to access your penis when its time to go to the bathroom, but some disagreed.

One person questioned: "But isn't manoeuvring your penis through that hole (usually with one button in the middle) more awkward than just pulling down the elasticised waistband and flopping it over the top edge?"

A valid question.

But it turns out there is another reason for the holes, and it's something I've only just found out.

According to the underwear brand Sheath, cited by the Sun, its primary purpose is to provide easy access for urination.

"The hole in your boxers is also called a fly," Sheath experts explain.

"You’re free to call them whatever name you want, but the functional term is still fly. Why is it there? You guessed it! The purpose of the fly is to make it easier for you to pee while wearing boxers."

However, the fly also offers additional comfort.

Sheath elaborates: "Today's modern underwear is nothing like what men wore even a few decades ago. The actual pouch where the fly is located has also been changing drastically. In the past, this area used to be flat. This design does not give the man a natural way for his penis to be contoured.

"Thankfully, men today have a better option. New boxer briefs and men's briefs have a design that actually has a roomier pouch. This new pouch design gives the man more definition, comfort, support, and freedom."

So in short, underwear without the hole offer less freedom but probably keep things in check a little better.

Whereas underwear with a hole gives men a bit more leeway and room to breathe down there, usually adding to the comfort.

So there we go, it's for ease of access, and for comfort.

And no, the holes near the waistband aren't intentional and are a sign you need to get some new undearwear.
