A high school principal in Louisiana sent a text to parents demanding that she approve all the dresses of girls attending prom at Southwood High School, including dates of students who don't attend the school, Yahoo! News reports.
Kim Pendleton explained in the message that female attendees would need to send in a photo of their dress in order to ascertain whether or not it is suitable.
"As you begin shopping for your attire, please make sure you do not purchase any clothes that are sheer or revealing in any manner," the message said, per NBC News.
This honor student called her school out when they 'unfairly' suspended her for breaching the school's dress code:"Prior to purchasing an outfit, I will need you to send me a picture of you in the outfit with your name and grade," the message continued. "Once I approve the outfit, you may purchase it. The approved outfit is the only one you will be allowed to wear to prom."
The message did not mention anything about the boys' prom outfits.
In a statement to NBC News, Pendleton, a new principal at the school, explained her reasoning behind the decision.
"In communicating the guidelines for appropriate conduct and dress, which are similar to what schools and districts require across the country, a decision was made to proactively work with families to ensure parents would not spend money on a dress which would be turned away for being inappropriate," the statement said.
Pendleton also explained in the statement that the controversial move was based on feedback she was given from staff concerning inappropriate dress at school events. She had gathered no concern about the male students' attire from this feedback.
Per NBC News, none of the prom outfits have been turned down as of yet. An assembly will be held at the school in order to clarify the prom dress code and to give students a chance to voice their own thoughts.
