The first same-sex couple in England to have a child by surrogate together, have split up after five years of marriage.

According to British tabloid newspaper The Sun, Tony and Barrie Drewitt-Barlow were in a relationship together for 34 years, only marrying at last in 2014.

The couple became famous in Britain in 1999 after they became the first gay dads, and the first same-sex couple to win the legal right to be named on their child's birth certificate as parents.

However, the pressures of parenthood, and Tony suffering from ill-health and treatment for cancer in 2006, all took its toll on the relationship. Now Barrie has revealed that he has fallen in love with Scott Hutchison - a man half his age who previously dated his 19-year-old daughter Saffron.

Saffron and Tony, have given them their blessing, and the three men still live under one roof, in their £6 million ($7.78 million US) mansion in Florida.

Commenting on the situation in an interview with The Sun, Barrie stated: "Tony and I decided many years ago it was better we had separate rooms. Once this had gone on for three or four years, we slid into a platonic relationship.

He continued: "People may judge me but our relationship has lasted a lot longer than many heterosexual relationships. I love Tony more than anyone. He’s my true love. I will never not adore him. He’s the most sensitive, loving person."

He added: "But somewhere along the way we turned from lovers into friends. Then Tony fell ill and over the past three years, his health has deteriorated. I can’t even find words to tell you how hard it has been for the whole family, not least Tony."

Barrie also commented on his new relationship with Scott, who was his PA for many years, stating: "I’ve fallen in love with Scott and he has done the same. I feel stupid at my age to have these feelings about someone other than Tony and half my age. But when you know something is right, it’s right."

Barrie and Tony had their twins, Saffron and Aspen, in 1999, carried in the womb of surrogate Rosalind Bellamy. They have since moved to the United States and founded a number of successful businesses together.
