People cannot agree on whether there's more doors or wheels in the world

Last weekend, Aukland resident Ryan Nixon tweeted a seemingly innocent question that has since divided the internet and sparked a global debate.

The question: Do you think there are more doors or wheels in the world?

When Ryan posted the unsuspecting query, there was no way he could have predicted the fallout that was to come.

Over 223,000 people have responded to his poll, while thousands more have taken to the comments to weigh in on the debate. While in theory, it would technically be possible to conduct a global survey of wheels and doors, it's unlikely that anyone ever will - regardless of how many people retweet Ryan's poll.

But that hasn't stopped everyone from passionately arguing their case, resorting to everything from complex mathematical equations to counting the doors and wheels in their own house to try and prove who's right and who's wrong.

Some people were adamant that doors trumped wheels, even with all the vehicles in the world.

"Doors. Four door cars and trucks nullify themselves. All ships have doors, no wheels. All buildings have doors, no wheels. Doors," wrote one supporter.

Another person argued that doors were naturally occurring, writing: "Valves are doors that occur in nature and are innumerable; wheels do not occur naturally, no plant or animal has a wheel."

Meanwhile, one user took a more mathematical approach to the problem, writing out a complicated equation to try to demonstrate their argument. "Using the ideology that wheels are only for vehicles and doors only count if they can be walked through. Think it’s quite clear that doors win," they wrote.

And one person even went so far as to claim that revolving doors make it an open and shut case, claiming they count for "infinite doors."

But over on team wheels, the pro-door arguments were enough to prompt some heated counter-attacks.

"Who is voting doors??? There’s wheels on everything. I have wheels on my garment rack, makeup storage holder, rubbish bin. It’s definitely wheels," one person commented.

Others drew attention to toys as a massive source of wheels-without-doors. "Every toy car with doors that don't open as well. Toys in general surely a huge win for wheels? Lego produces more than 300 million tires a year," wrote one user, while another agreed that "in any home with kids or grandkids there are far, far more wheels than doors."

And others pointed out that, while not all wheels have doors, many doors have wheels. "Don't forget internal wheels (not always the same as cogs). Loads of stuff with push-pull mechanisms require wheels, e.g. most drawers will have 2," they argued.

Thousands of comments later, the debate rages on, often raising more questions than it answers. Is a cog a wheel? Is a door that doesn't open still a door? And what about windows?

According to Ryan's poll, team wheels is edging its way to victory with 53.6% of the popular vote. But with such a small margin of victory, we can't say anything for certain.

So, what do you think - wheels or doors? Let us know your answer in the comments section!
