Christina Applegate reveals harsh reason she left ex-boyfriend Brad Pitt at awards ceremony
Christina Applegate has revealed why she once cruelly left a young Brad Pitt at the MTV Video Music Awards.
The 54-year-old movie star hit fame when she was just 15. A couple of years later, at 17, she was part of a circle of friends that included a then-little-known actor, Brad Pitt, as well as Johnny Depp, whom Applegate admits she had a crush on for years.
In her memoir You With the Sad Eyes: A Memoir by Christina Applegate, she explains that she and Pitt were initially just friends. However, their relationship briefly shifted when they both started to see each other in a different light.
Why did Applegate leave Pitt?
Attending the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards, accompanied by her date-of-choice Pitt, who was only 26 at the time, the Big Hit star was scheduled to present an award. The youthful Pitt even made the effort to chauffeur her mother, the actress, Nancy Priddy, to the event.
However, Applegate revealed that the evening took an unexpected turn, leaving Hollywood A-lister, Pitt, distraught. Rather than leaving with her original date, as is customary at such soirees, she took a particular liking to Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach, before making haste with the ‘I Remember You’ singer.
After making her audacious exit, Pitt reportedly had to drive her mother home on his own, with the situation leaving him offended. According to Applegate, the Inglorious Basterds star held a grudge for years. To make matters worse, not only did she alienate a love interest, but she later discovered that Bach already had a partner and a young child, leaving her regretting her decision immediately.
Applegate confirmed that she and Pitt weren’t on speaking terms for a long time afterwards, though they eventually reconciled and agreed that she had simply been young, immature, and caught up in the moment. She quipped that "Of course, Brad is now THE Brad Pitt, and Sebastian Bach... well, he still has long hair, I guess."
What else does her memoir discuss?
Applegate also reflected on her marriage to actor Johnathon Schaech in 2001: "The worst thing was the moment I walked around the corner and into the ceremony. One of my favourite songs was playing, and when I looked hard at the face of my husband-to-be, I thought, 'Oh f**k. F**k, oh f**k. And I knew right then that this was not the man for me."
Elsewhere in the book, Applegate discusses her struggles with body image and her diagnosis of multiple sclerosis in 2021. Despite being widely viewed as a beauty icon and industry heartthrob, she said she “still couldn’t be convinced” that she was “an attractive person.”
