Willow Smith this week revealed she wants to date one man and one woman simultaneously after coming out as polyamorous to mom Jada Pinkett-Smith.

The 20-year-old, who is also the daughter of actor Will Smith, dished on her sexual identity on the latest episode of her mother's Facebook show Red Table Talk.

Willow admitted that while she can't see herself "going past two partners", she definitely wants more than one.

While it may seem rare for people to declare themselves to be polyamorous, nearly a third of American millennials admit their ideal relationship was non-monogamous to some degree, according to a 2020 YouGov poll.

But what exactly does polyamory mean? We break it down for you, below:

Polyamory is the idea of being involved romantically and sexually with more than one partner at the same time.

All partners involved must give their full consent.

The term derives from the Greek word "poly" - meaning "many", and the Latin "amor", meaning "love".

What does it involve?

Polyamory basically means a non-monogamous relationship.

The specific meaning is somewhat fluid - meaning that the number of partners a person can have can range anywhere from two to more.

Per Healthline, it can also act as an umbrella term for multiple partners that are not connected - such as a group of people who date one another (such as a throuple), as well one primary couple who respectively date others, too.

The biggest misconception about the term polyamory is that it's all about sex.

Dedeker Winston, author of The Smart Girl’s Guide to Polyamory, told Glamour: "There are a lot of people in the polyamorous community who identify as [asexual]."

Polyamory and an open relationship can often trigger some confusion to those who do not associate themselves with them.

Although both are considered non-monogamous, polyamorous relationships are not solely based on sex.

Whereas an open relationship is typically defined as having outside sexual relationships that do not form into relationships.

Which other celebrities are polyamorous?

Willow isn't the only celebrity to open about her sexual identity.

Actor Ethan Hawke has famously opened up about his marriage to wife Ryan, whom he's been married to since 2008. He has spoken about the unrealistic expectations monogamy places on relationships.

He told Mr Porter magazine: "People have such a childish view of monogamy and fidelity. 'He's cheated so he's bad, she's cheated so she's bad,' as opposed to a recognition that our species is not monogamous. Sexual fidelity can't be the whole thing you hang your relationship on."

Other stars have been honest about their dating lives, with Big Little Lies actress Shailene Woodley previously confessing to being in an open relationship.

Actress Megan Fox and YouTubers Jake Paul and Tana Mongeau have also respectively admitted to being in open relationships in the past.

Willow came out as bisexual and polyfidelitous (a form of non-monogamy) two years ago on her weekly Facebook Watch series.

She said on the show:

"I love men and women equally and so I would definitely want one man, one woman.

"I feel like I could be polyfidelitous with those two people. I'm not the kind of person that is constantly looking for new sexual experiences.

"I focus a lot on the emotional connection and I feel like if I were to find two people of the different genders that I really connected with and we had a romantic and sexual connection, I don't feel like I would feel the need to try to go find more."
