A woman has gone viral after sharing a list of rules given to her by her "toxic" boyfriend.

This list has now opened up a wider discussion about the effects of abusive relationships - and the long-term impact they can have.

It was shared on Twitter by Zoe Scholefield, from Wakefield, West Yorkshire, who, alongside the rules, explained that despite her ex's controlling ways, he went onto be unfaithful to her.

The list was sent to her before she went on a night out with friends. In it, her controlling boyfriend warned her not to "dance like a s***" and to tell him "everything that happens" once she returned home.

But that's not all, there are 12 points on the list, which also includes a rule telling Zoe that she can't even wear what she likes. And whatever she has on must be pre-approved by her boyfriend.

Rule three read: "No boys and if anyone comes up to you and talks to you, you tell them you have a boyfriend." Rule eight continued: "You let me know everything that happens and be ready to explain stories."

She captioned the screenshot of the rules: "Funny how my ex sent me stuff like this then has the audacity to cheat on me."

Rule ten read: "Even when I'm asleep text me to tell me things so I can see in [the] morning."

But perhaps the most outrageous and disturbing rule of them all was rule 12, which demanded: "If you can, [I] want a video of [your] room before you sleep to prove no one else is there and you are off to sleep [sic]."

At the time of writing, the tweet has been liked over 35K times, with countless users offering their support to Zoe, and calling out her ex for his controlling behavior:

In an interview with The Independent, Adina Claire, acting co-chief executive of domestic abuse charity Women's Aid, said: "It's never acceptable for your partner to give you a list of rules and regulations to abide by.

“This is a clear example of controlling behavior, and it's great to see so many people recognizing this and supporting Zoe on social media."
