Footage from the scene showed Obama arriving and walking up to the famous black door, though Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was not seen greeting him.

The reason for Obama's visit to Sunak was not immediately known, with Downing Street sources initially refusing to discuss what the undisclosed private meeting was about.

However, a Downing Street spokesperson later told the Independent that the visit was an "informal courtesy drop-in" as part of Obama's visit to London.

They added: "President Obama’s team made contact and obviously the prime minister was very happy to to meet with him and discuss the work of the Obama Foundation."

The Obama Foundation is a nonprofit organization founder by the former president in 2014, focused on social mobility.
