A man has been arrested after a young boy died of fentanyl intoxication -- after it was originally believed he had an allergic reaction to fruit.

As reported by PEOPLE, the stepfather of eight-year-old Trey Major Harris has been arrested and charged in relation to the youngster's death.

The Hopkins County Coroner's Office confirmed that Trey - who is from Madisonville, Kentucky - had, in fact, died from fentanyl intoxication, when it was initially thought that he had suffered an allergic reaction from eating strawberries.

Trey's family told authorities the little boy had eaten several strawberries during a school fundraiser on March 14 and had begun showing signs of an allergic reaction. He was rushed to hospital later that evening after things continued to get worse.

Trey was then sent home in the early hours of the following morning and went to sleep.

A public warning was also sent out to those who attended the fundraiser, but was retracted after an investigation ruled that the strawberries were suitable for human consumption.

"The Hopkins County Health Department would like to advise that we have received the results from the FDA and state lab concerning the strawberries from the North and Central Fundraiser today," the notice read. "Testing of the strawberries was reported as negative today by the State Epidemiologist. The state Food and Safety Branch has also reviewed the reports."

Police later received a call in the early hours of the morning that Trey was "not breathing and unresponsive at his home". Sadly, the boy was pronounced dead soon after.

The manner of death was deemed "Undetermined" after further investigation.

Police arrested Trey's stepfather, 33-year-old Antonio Person, last month and have now charged him with drug trafficking and second-degree manslaughter after they received a warrant to search his home.

There, officers discovered a firearm, drugs, and drug paraphernalia, as per a now-deleted press release by the Madisonville Police Department.

The department confirmed to PEOPLE that Person has formally been charged with second-degree manslaughter, trafficking fentanyl, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.

In an obituary, Trey was referred to as someone who "brought immense love and joy to their lives and his family and friends."

"Trey left an indelible mark on all blessed to know him, including his school, Hanson Elementary, and his second-grade class," the tribute continued. "Trey loved all things sports and had special interests in baseball, basketball, skateboarding, and football. Out of all his hobbies, riding his four-wheeler was what he loved most."

It also went on to state that the 8-year-old dreamed of becoming a police officer when he got older "because he loved helping others."

"Trey will be forever missed by his loving mother, Whitney Person, his loving father, Dwaine Harris, and his stepfather, Antonio Person. He is forever in the hearts of his amazing big brothers, Jaden and Jyrese... [and his] cousins, family, friends, teachers, coaches, and the community," the obituary concluded.

Our thoughts are with Trey's family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.
