A couple was left furious after receiving an unexpectedly enormous bill for a single bowl of pasta and two smoothies while on vacation.

Oscar Maldonado and his boyfriend, who are from Honduras, were left severely out of pocket after being hit with a bill over double the monthly wage in their home country for one meal.

The couple revealed they were charged $643 (600 Euros) for two smoothies, a bowl of pasta, and service charges after visiting DK Oyster in Mykonos, Greece.

Oscar claimed he and his boyfriend were lured into the restaurant by waiters offering them free use of the sunbeds at the beachside location as long as they bought a drink.

Assuming it would work out cheaper than the high prices other vendors charge for sunbeds by the beach, the pair chose two smoothies and a plat of lobster pasta to enjoy in the sunshine.

However, they were in for a nasty shock once the bill arrived, and they saw it had come to just under 500 Euros for their drinks and meal, with a 99.97 Euro service charge on top.

Oscar told The Mirror: "They were really really nice and the service was really good, they made conversation with us.

"We ordered non-alcoholic drinks. Just some smoothies. I didn't ask for the price, then they brought the menu over. It was misleading to say the least. My boyfriend had the lobster pasta."

Like many others who claimed to have fallen victim to the same venue, Oscar says he wasn't told that the lobster is charged by the gram, leading to the huge sum they were faced with on their bill.

He claims the restaurant brought out the "biggest lobster" in the pasta, which the couple say "wasn't that bad" to the taste.

The 34-year-old, who works as a doctor, added: "I thought it may cost a lot, but I never thought that much."

He found out as well as the high cost of the lobster itself, the pair had been charged 65 Euro for each smoothie as well.

Oscar added: "I felt tempted to call the police, but I didn't want to cause any trouble. I said 'how do you calculate this?' He just went on a rant repeating 'service fee'."

He revealed he "just paid and left" but the experience left him raging for the rest of the day and almost ruined the couple's holiday.

"I really wasn't expecting it. I live on a Honduran salary, so going to Europe is especially hard. It was a couple's trip. It was really frustrating. I cannot think about Mykonos without transporting back to this moment," he added.

Oscar was among the many who shared their experience on Tripadvisor and also posted a copy of his receipt, which simply shows the sum and is not itemized - which others had also complained about.

The restaurant had faced so many negative reviews for the same alleged deception about the high prices that Tripadvisor has now added a warning to the review page.

It reads: "Tripadvisor has been made aware of recent media reports or events concerning this property which may not be reflected in reviews found on this listing. Accordingly, you may wish to perform additional research for information about this property when making your travel plans."

Some have also claimed that locals are charged less than tourists visiting the restaurant, with meals costing a fraction of the price for some compared to others.

Dimitrios Kalamaras, the owner of DK Oyster, previously slammed those complaining about their bills, adding that "no adult in their right mind" would order a drink without seeing how much it costs first, per the Mail Online.

He told the outlet: "Every time I received such a complaint, always by anonymous users through Tripadvisor, I consulted with the personnel, reminding that it is crucial for our reputation to be sure that procedures are followed carefully.

"They always assured me that they abide by the rules. So, I used Tripadvisor to encourage our guests to always browse carefully through the menu and the prices."
